Which external flash is most compatible with Olympus OM-D series cameras?

Hey everyone! I’ve been a loyal Olympus OM-D user for a couple of years now—currently rocking the E-M1 Mark III—and I absolutely love the system for its portability and incredible stabilization. However, up until now, I’ve mostly been a 'natural light' shooter. Recently, I’ve been trying to get more into event photography and indoor portraiture, and I’m quickly realizing that relying on high ISO just isn't cutting it anymore when the light gets tricky.

I’m looking to invest in a solid external flash, but I’m honestly a bit overwhelmed by the options. I know Olympus (now OM System) has their own branded flashes like the FL-700WR and the beefy FL-900R, but they are quite a significant investment. On the other hand, I keep seeing people in various groups rave about third-party brands like Godox and Nissin.

My biggest concern is 100% compatibility. I’ve heard a few horror stories about TTL (Through The Lens) metering not being quite accurate on third-party units, or the High-Speed Sync (HSS) being finicky when you really need it. Since the OM-D bodies are so compact, I also don’t want something that’s going to make my setup feel incredibly top-heavy or awkward to hold for a four-hour shoot. I’ve been looking specifically at the Godox V350O because of its size, but I’m worried I might miss out on the power or the seamless 'it just works' experience of a native Olympus flash.

I really need something that supports the Olympus RC wireless system reliably or has a great built-in radio trigger for off-camera work. Weather sealing would also be a huge plus, as I do a lot of outdoor shooting in unpredictable conditions.

For those of you who have been using the OM-D series for a while, which external flash have you found to be the most reliable and 'native-feeling' in terms of performance? Is it worth shelling out the extra cash for the OM System branded gear, or is there a third-party gem that balances price and compatibility perfectly?

Stumbled upon this... basically, MFT bodies use specific signaling for TTL and HSS. If that timing is off, exposure fails, which is why native is so pricey. But for a budget fix, I suggest the Godox V350O. Its about $160 and fits the E-M1III perfectly without being top-heavy!! Pair it with a Godox XPro-O TTL Wireless Flash Trigger for off-camera work. Ive been super happy with it tbh. cheers!

basically i been shooting Oly for years but still feel like a newbie lol. 1. honestly i suggest the Godox V350O since its way cheaper, like $160ish. its so tiny!
2. but be careful cuz third party TTL can be weird... maybe look for a used Olympus FL-700WR? its weather sealed which is huge. tbh native just feels safer if u can find a deal. gl!
