Hey everyone! I’ve been using my kit zoom for street photography on my Lumix GX9, but I’m ready to switch to a prime for that compact, low-profile look. I'm torn between something wider like the Olympus 17mm f1.8 or the classic Panasonic 20mm f1.7 pancake. Portability is huge for me because I want to stay discrete, but fast autofocus is also a priority for those quick candid shots. I mostly shoot in busy city centers, often in lower light during blue hour. Between the 17mm, 20mm, and maybe even the 15mm Leica, which one offers the best balance of sharpness and character for MFT? I'd love to hear your experiences!
> I'm torn between something wider like the Olympus 17mm f1.8 or the classic Panasonic 20mm f1.7 pancake... fast autofocus is also a priority Dude, i feel u on wanting that low-profile look! But honestly, I'd be realy cautious about the Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH.. Over the years, I've tried many pancakes, and while that one is tiny, the AF motor is pretty dated. It’s kinda slow and tends to hunt in low light, which literally ruined moments for me before. You might find this useful—check out the "Mirrorless Comparison" website. They have amazing side-by-side AF tests for MFT glass. For the Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9, I highkey recommend the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH.. It’s snappy and the 15mm width is perfect for busy streets. Plus, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 has that "clutch" ring for manual zone focusing if ur into that. idk, maybe just stick to the 15mm for the best speed? gl!
In my experience, choosing the wrong glass for low light can really mess up ur workflow. i’ve had focus hunting issues with some of those smaller lenses that literally ruined candid moments... super frustrating!! tbh it definitely depends on your needs. do you strictly use autofocus or do you like to zone focus? also, is weather sealing a big deal for you? knowing those details helps narrow down the safest choice for ur kit. gl!
