I’ve been shooting with my Lumix G9 for a while now, but I’m looking to step up my portrait game. My kit lens just isn't giving me that creamy, shallow depth of field I’m after. I’ve been looking at the Olympus 45mm f1.8 because it's so compact, but the Panasonic 42.5mm f1.7 also seems like a great contender for the price. I mostly shoot outdoor portraits of my family, so I really need something sharp with beautiful bokeh. My budget is roughly $400, though I could stretch it slightly for the right glass. Between all the options, I'm a bit torn on what to pick. Which prime lens would you recommend as the 'must-have' for portraits on the M4/3 system?

Seconding that! Honestly, I found the 42.5mm bokeh way too nervous outdoors... kinda disappointing. Grab the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Micro Four Thirds instead; its technically sharper with better rendering.

Oh man, I totally get the struggle! I’ve been using the G9 for a while now and honestly, the kit lens just doesn't cut it for those dreamy family shots. Since you’re already on a Lumix body, I’d highkey recommend the Panasonic LUMIX G 42.5mm f/1.7 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. over the Oly. Basically, it plays much nicer with your G9's stabilization system (Dual IS is a game changer for low light). Plus, it focuses way closer than the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 45mm f/1.8, which is super handy for tight headshots. But if you can stretch that $400 budget just a tiny bit, you really gotta look at the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Micro Four Thirds. It's literally the sharpest lens I own and the f/1.4 aperture gives you that extra bokeh "oomph" that M4/3 sometimes lacks compared to full frame. I've been super happy with mine (it basically never leaves my camera lol). Either way, you’re gonna be so satisfied with the jump in quality... good luck!

You should seriously check out the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 75mm f/1.8. This glass is basically legendary for portraits and I've shot with it for years! Results are always fantastic and the reliability is top-notch.

  • Sharpness: It is pin-sharp from edge to edge even at f1.8.
  • Background melt: The longer focal length gives you way better separation for those outdoor family shots than a 45mm.
  • Build quality: It is a solid piece of metal that won't ever let you down. This lens is easily my favorite for the whole system. Check the used market and you can probably snag one for around $400. It's a massive step up from any kit lens!
