What are the absolute must-have travel accessories for a Micro Four Thirds camera because I'm honestly so overwhelmed right now? I just bought an Olympus OM-D E-M10 for my trip to Japan next month and I have no idea if I need extra batteries or filters or what. I keep reading about speedboosters and bags but my budget is only like $200 for extras and I dont want to carry heavy stuff. Is a tripod necessary for street photos?

Sorry if this is a basic question but I'm totally new to this and the manual is huge so I'm panicking about forgetting something important. Is there anything specific for these smaller cameras like a special strap or something?

Saw this earlier but finally got a minute to chime in! Japan is going to be amazing with that E-M10! I remember my first time in Osaka dragging around a massive DSLR... my back was killing me by day three lol. Switching to MFT totally changed how I travel. Honestly, forget the big tripod for street photography. It is just more weight you dont need and you will just be in peoples way in crowded spots. Plus, the stabilization on that Olympus is magic! If you really want a steady shot for night scenes, just grab a Manfrotto Pixi Mini Tripod Black. It fits in a jacket pocket and costs next to nothing. Since youre trying to stay under $200, dont get sucked into buying a $150 camera bag. I love the Think Tank Photo Mirrorless Mover 10 Pewter because its tiny, cheap, and fits the E-M10 like a glove. It doesnt scream expensive camera which is nice too. Also, definitely grab a high-quality SD card. I used a cheap one once and it died halfway through a trip to Tokyo... total nightmare. Now I only use the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card for everything. Spend that extra money on ramen and sushi instead! Youll have a blast and that little camera is gonna capture some incredible memories without weighing you down. Those Shinjuku neon lights look fantastic on an Olympus sensor!

Quick reply while I have a sec. You definitely want extra power because those E-M10 batteries are tiny and wont last a full day of sightseeing. Since you are on a budget, stick to these basics:

Take a deep breath because you honestly picked the best system for Japan. When I first started traveling with my current setup, I was so worried about missing out on shots that I overpacked. I ended up so satisfied once I realized I didnt need half that junk. Here is what I found actually matters:

  • Extra batteries are non-negotiable. I usually carry three and it feels great knowing I wont run out of juice mid-afternoon.
  • A really simple padded sleeve or a small insert for your regular bag works well. You dont need a dedicated heavy camera bag.
  • Skip the tripod for street photography. These cameras have incredible stabilization and I have no complaints about my handheld night shots. Keeping it light is the way to go. You are gonna have a blast... Japan is a photographers dream!
