I have been shooting with my Lumix G9 for about a year now, and while I absolutely love the ergonomics and features, I am finding my current aluminum tripod is just too much of a pain to haul around on long hikes. I am planning a photography trip to the Pacific Northwest next month and I really need something more portable that does not compromise too much on stability.
The G9 is a bit of a beefy body for Micro Four Thirds, and when I have my Leica 12-60mm or the 100-400mm telephoto attached, it gets pretty front-heavy. I have been looking at the Peak Design Travel Tripod and some of the carbon fiber options from Benro, but I am worried about whether they can truly handle the weight without drifting during long exposures. I definitely need something that folds down small enough to fit in a standard carry-on or strap to the side of a 30L camera pack without hitting me in the head. My budget is around 300 to 450 dollars, but I am willing to stretch it if the build quality is really there.
Does anyone else here use a G9 for travel photography? What specific tripod models have you found that strike the best balance between being lightweight for hiking and sturdy enough for those heavier MFT lenses?
> I have been looking at the Peak Design Travel Tripod Adding my two cents... Honestly, I had issues with the Peak Design Travel Tripod Carbon Fiber because it just didn't hold my G9 steady for long exposures... it was pretty disappointing. Check out The Center Column website; it's a great resource for objective stiffness data. Pro tip: the Leofoto LS-284C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod is much stiffer for ur front-heavy lenses!
For your situation, i definitely feel u on the G9 weight... that 100-400mm is like a weightlifting session lol. i think these work well:
I have spent way too much money trying to find a setup that doesnt wobble when I'm using my G9... it is a chunky camera for MFT, especially with that 100-400mm hanging off the front.
