Canon has introduced the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye, a compact stereoscopic lens designed for creating VR content using APS-C cameras. The lens boasts a 144º field of view and is the first non-L series lens to include Canon's Air Sphere Coating. Its optical design features 11 elements in 8 groups, including two UD glass elements, and has an interpupillary distance of 60mm to closely mimic human vision.
This marks Canon's second VR lens for the RF mount, following the RF 5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye for full-frame cameras. The new 3.9mm lens targets social media creators, offering affordability and ease of use for producing vlog-style VR content. The lens is compatible with the Canon EOS R7 camera but will require a firmware update.
Canon has expressed a strong interest in the VR, AR, and XR markets, believing they are well-positioned to provide the necessary production tools. During a recent interview in Japan, Canon executives emphasized their commitment to these emerging technologies.
The RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM Dual Fisheye is set to be released in June with a suggested retail price of $1,099.
