What are you guys using for landscape filters on the newer Nikon Z-mount lenses, especially the 14-30mm f/4? I've been shooting with Nikon DSLRs for over a decade and always relied on my old Lee 100mm kit, but I just moved to a Z7II and the vignetting on these wider mirrorless lenses is way worse than I expected at 14mm.

I'm heading to Glacier National Park in three weeks and need a solid circular polarizer and some NDs that wont weigh me down. I've got about $400 and I'm looking at those magnetic Kase sets but wonder if they're actually worth it over standard B+W screw-ons. Do they hold up in windy weather or am I just gonna lose them in the brush?

Regarding what #1 said about "I moved from a square system to magnetic rings on my Z7II and it was honestly a mess..."

  • I actually have to disagree a bit! I think the whole thing comes down to the frame thickness. I'm totally obsessed with the Breakthrough Photography X4 CPL 82mm for that specific lens. It's genuinely amazing and the brass frame is so slim that I get zero shading at 14mm. Since you're heading to Glacier (so jealous!), you should definitely grab the Breakthrough Photography X4 ND 10-Stop 82mm too. You can get both for under $350 and the color neutrality is just fantastic. No weird purple casts to fix later! It's way more secure than magnets when you're scrambling over rocks or dealing with high winds. You're gonna have such a blast... the Z7II is basically built for those mountains. Feel free to ask if you need more tips for the park!

Re: I moved from a square system to magnetic... are you planning to stack them? I'm super happy with the Kase Wolverine Magnetic Circular Filters 82mm kit. They hold tight in wind.

I moved from a square system to magnetic rings on my Z7II and it was honestly a mess. Unfortunately, at the 14mm focal length, even a thin ring profile causes significant corner shading in the raw files.

  • Magnetic tension is often inconsistent
  • Stacked filters increase vignetting
  • Light leak is a major problem I actually had a filter pop off during a gusty shoot recently. It just wasnt as reliable as I expected.
