I'm finally looking to upgrade my portrait gear for my Nikon D850. I’m torn between a classic 85mm prime or a faster 50mm for tighter spaces. I'd love something with great sharpness and creamy bokeh, ideally under $1,000. What’s your personal favorite F-mount glass for capturing stunning headshots?
- Seconding the recommendation above!!
- Honestly, try a used Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G... it's safer than 3rd party and hits that $800 mark if your careful. gl
Seconding the recommendation above!! Honestly, i've also had issues with 3rd party AF hunting on my D850, super frustrating... - Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G: Probs your best bet. Sharp and reliable, tho the bokeh isn't as "creamy" as the f/1.4 version.
- Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G: Way better for tight spots, but you'll get some weird facial distortion on headshots... i'd avoid it for close-ups. Native Nikon glass is just safer tbh!!
In my experience: 1. Grab the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G cuz its way more reliable for headshots than a 50mm.
2. Honestly, ive had issues with the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art having AF hunting problems on my D850, which was super disappointing... basically, stick to Nikon glass for professional reliability.
Works great for me
Lol I was literally about to post the same thing. Glad someone else brought it up.
Solid advice 👍
