Hey everyone! I’ve been shooting with my Nikon D7500 for a year now, but I’m really starting to feel limited by my standard kit lens. I’m looking to get into more bird photography and maybe some local sports, so I definitely need more reach. I'm searching for a versatile telephoto lens that’s light enough for hiking but still sharp. My budget is around $500, and I’ve been eyeing the AF-P 70-300mm VR, but I’m curious if there are other DX-specific options I should consider instead. Does anyone have a favorite 'all-rounder' telephoto that balances price and performance well for a DX setup?
In my experience, you should definitely stick with the Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR. Its honestly the best balance of price and performance for a DX body like yours. I've used it on my own D7500 and for the money, its kinda hard to beat. Heres why I think it fits your needs:
- The AF-P motor is SO fast. This is huge for birds and sports where things move quick.
- Its super light. Basically perfect for hiking all day without feeling like youre carrying a brick.
- Its way sharper than the old 55-200mm kit lenses, even when youre zoomed all the way in. Just make sure to get the VR version!! Seriously, without vibration reduction, shooting at 300mm is gonna be a total nightmare. You might want to consider the Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD too, but its way heavier and honestly, the Nikon glass is just smoother. plus it's well under your $500 limit. gl!
Seconding that! The Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR is killer, but honestly the FX Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR has better sealing. TL;DR: DX for weight, FX for durability.
