Im honestly so frustrated with my Z6ii right now because the 24-70 f4 just feels so flat and lifeless. I have this huge family reunion shoot in Seattle next month and I feel like im gonna fail if I dont get some actual character in my shots. Everything looks like a phone photo lately and it’s stressing me out big time.

I have about 1200 left for one or maybe two lenses if I buy used. I need that shallow depth of field back but the Z mount options are overwhelming me. What are the best prime lenses for Nikon Z series cameras that actually have some soul?

Late to the thread but I have been very satisfied with the f/1.8 S-line lenses for my Z6ii. You really dont need to spend f/1.2 money to get that soul youre looking for. I have found some practical ways to stay under your 1200 budget while getting professional results.

  • Look at Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S. It is incredibly sharp and works well for almost any situation.
  • For portraits at the reunion, Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.8 S is perfect for that shallow depth of field.
  • Buy from used markets like MPB or KEH. I have had no complaints with their grading systems and it saves a ton of cash.
  • Check the LensTip website for technical breakdowns if you want to see how these perform against your zoom. Basically, getting these two used will fit your budget perfectly and fix that flat look you are seeing. It is a very methodical way to build a kit without overspending.
