I finally pulled the trigger on the Z8 after using my D850 for like seven years and man the jump to mirrorless is wild. The autofocus is insane but I realized pretty quick that my old stash of EN-EL15 batteries isnt gonna cut it for a full day of shooting. I have a wedding coming up in two weeks and I'm realizing I need way more stuff than I thought. Already looking at CFexpress Type B cards because my old SDs feel so slow now. I have about 500 bucks left in the budget for extras. Beyond just extra batteries and fast cards what are you guys actually using day to day? Any specific screen protectors or maybe a vertical grip that doesnt feel too bulky?

Honestly, the battery life on the Z8 is kinda a letdown compared to the old D850 tank. I tried saving some cash with cheap off-brand batteries but unfortunately they kept giving me compatibility errors, which is a nightmare mid-shoot. It sucks that the official Nikon EN-EL15c Rechargeable Li-ion Battery costs so much, but you gotta have them for a wedding. Here is how I kept my budget from exploding:

To add to the point above: honestly, moving from the D850 is a bit of a shock when it comes to the logistics. Been shooting Nikon for years and I was super disappointed with how fast the Z8 drains power compared to my old DSLR. It’s kinda frustrating that you basically need a whole power station in your bag now... Since you mentioned weddings, here’s some stuff that went wrong for me that you should look out for:

  • A solid L-bracket is often better than a bulky grip. Generic ones usually fit poorly, which was a total waste of money when I tried one. The SmallRig L-Bracket for Nikon Z8 3942 is actually decent because it doesnt block the ports, tho the battery door access could definitely be smoother.
  • Long wedding days require a high-speed PD power bank. Older USB chargers wont even trickle charge this thing while it’s on, which is just annoying. The Anker 737 Power Bank PowerCore 24K is a lifesaver during receptions, even if it adds more weight to the bag than I’d like.
  • Dont forget a good card reader. That old SD reader is gonna be a huge bottleneck for those massive files. Cheap brands kept overheating during transfers for me, which is the last thing you want at 2 AM after a 12 hour day. Swapping to the ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B and SD Dual-Slot USB 3.2 Gen 2 Card Reader made a huge difference in my workflow. Mirrorless tech is wild but the extra costs are a real buzzkill. Ngl, the transition is way pricier than I expected.
