honestly fed up with my old Neewer unit it keeps misfiring during critical shots and im literally ready to throw it out the window. my logic was that i could save some cash since the D850 body was already so expensive but now im paying the price with missed moments. i have a wedding gig in Chicago in two weeks and i absolutely cannot risk this again.

was thinking about the SB-5000 but the price is just insane... is it actually worth it or should i look at Godox? im stuck between wanting reliability and not wanting to spend another 600 bucks. what are you guys actually using that doesnt fail every five minutes?

Honestly, I've had issues with budget gear failing during ceremonies too, and its just a nightmare. The Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight is technically the superior choice because of the integrated cooling system that handles 100 consecutive bursts, but unfortunately the price tag is a total letdown for most of us. I tested the Godox V1-N TTL Li-ion Round Head Flash and while the 76Ws output is decent, the thermal protection kicked in way too early for my liking, which was disappointing during a fast-paced reception. If you want a middle ground, the Godox V860III-N TTL Li-ion Flash is technically impressive with its 1.5s recycle time. It's not as rugged as the Nikon, but the battery life is massive compared to AA units. Just don't expect the same weather sealing. Reach out if you need help looking at the sync specs or more data points.

To add to the point above: if you dont want a round head, check out the Godox V860III-N TTL Camera Flash. Its the industry standard for wedding shooters on a budget. Quick tips for your D850:

  • Grab a spare Godox VB26A Lithium Battery so you arent fumbling with AAs mid-ceremony.
  • Use the modeling light to pre-check shadows. It feels way more solid than any Neewer junk ive used over the years.

If you're really worried about those once in a lifetime moments in Chicago, sticking with native Nikon gear is usually the safest bet for total peace of mind. The D850 communicates so much better with its own brand than third-party units do. If the flagship 5000 is too much for the budget, the Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight is a legendary mid-range choice. It might not have the radio control or the insane cooling of the top-tier model, but its dead simple to use and the TTL accuracy is basically flawless. I've used one for years and it just... works. No weird menu diving or connection drops mid-shoot. One thing people often overlook with reliability is the power source. If your current unit is misfiring, it could be the recycle time stalling out because the cells cant keep up. I would suggest grabbing a few packs of Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA Rechargeable Batteries rather than standard alkalines. They maintain a much more consistent voltage which helps the flash keep up during a busy reception when you're firing off shots quickly. If you're gonna do weddings, you really need that consistency. The SB-700 also has a thermal cut-out that is very conservative, meaning it wont melt itself if you go trigger happy, tho it might slow you down for a minute to cool off. Honestly, for the price of a new or even a clean used unit, you're getting something that will likely outlast the camera body itself. Just keep a second set of Eneloops in your pocket and you'll be set for the whole night.
