Hello, I'm planning to use it with Nikon Z8 and need a flash recommendation. What would you take?
I’ve been using the Godox V1 (Nikon version) on my Z8 for events and it’s been a really easy match. i-TTL exposure is surprisingly consistent, and the Z8’s metering doesn’t freak out when you bounce off ceilings or switch between ISO ranges. The round head isn’t just hype either—it gives a smoother falloff on faces, and the magnetic modifiers are handy when you’re moving fast (I keep the little dome and grid in my bag). The rechargeable battery is the real win for me: I’ll shoot a long reception and not babysit AA swaps. Also love that it plays nice with Godox’s 2.4GHz wireless if you add off-camera lights later.
I’ve been running a Nikon SB-700 on my Z8 for events and quick portraits, and it just “plays nice” with the camera. i-TTL exposure is surprisingly consistent, especially when I’m bouncing off a low ceiling and moving fast. The head tilts and swivels smoothly, so I can go from vertical to horizontal without fighting it, and the built-in diffuser/reflector combo is handy when you want a softer look without extra gear. Recycle time feels quick on decent NiMH AAs, and the controls are simple enough that I’m not buried in menus while the Z8 is ready to shoot. For a compact speedlight, it’s a great match.
I’ve been running a Nikon Z8 with a Nikon SB-700 for small events and quick portraits, and it’s been a really easy combo. The Z8’s i-TTL exposure plays nicely with the SB-700, so bounce shots off a ceiling come out consistent without a bunch of fiddling. I also like the SB-700’s rotating/tilting head and the built-in bounce card—super handy when you’re moving fast. The power is plenty for indoor work, and recycle time feels solid on good NiMH AAs. Bonus: the menus are simple, so changing compensation or switching to manual on the fly doesn’t slow me down.
I’ve been using the Godox V860III (Nikon version) on my Z8 for a few months and it’s been a really solid pairing. i-TTL exposure has been surprisingly consistent, even when I’m bouncing off ceilings and moving fast at events. The Li‑ion battery is the big win for me—way faster recycle than my old AA speedlight and it lasts basically the whole shoot. I also like having the built-in 2.4GHz radio so I can throw an AD200 on a stand and control it right from the flash without extra triggers. The little LED modeling light sounds gimmicky, but it’s actually handy for quick focusing in darker rooms.
Anyone shooting a Z8 with flash notice quirks with i-TTL consistency, especially bouncing off low ceilings? I’m torn between sticking with Nikon’s SB units for reliability or going Godox for the ecosystem—curious what’s been the least “fiddly” setup for you.
Anyone shooting a Z8 with flash for events—what’s your go-to setup for consistent exposure? I’m torn between sticking with Nikon’s Speedlights for reliability vs trying Godox for the radio system. Also curious if you’ve noticed any quirks with high-speed sync or flicker under LED lighting.
Has anyone here dialed in a flash setup they actually *like* on the Z8? I’m torn between staying TTL for fast events vs going manual for consistency, especially with bouncing indoors. Curious what speedlight/trigger combo feels reliable without weird exposure swings.
> What would you take? ^ This. Also, you really need to be careful with the hot shoe connection. When I first switched from my old DSLRs to the Z8, I noticed some of my older flashes sat just a hair off, which caused some annoying misfires during a client shoot. Eventually I just bit the bullet and grabbed the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight and I've been totally satisfied. It works well with the radio control and communication errors are non-existent now. No complaints about the recycle speed either, even when the Z8 is ripping through frames... Quick tips for the Z8 setup:
