Hey everyone! I finally made the jump to the Nikon D850 after shooting with a D750 for years. I absolutely love the massive resolution, but I’ve noticed that my older zoom lenses are really starting to show their age on this 45.7MP sensor. I’m looking to step up my portrait game and want to invest in a high-quality prime lens that can truly take advantage of what this body can do.

I primarily shoot outdoor lifestyle portraits and some tight headshots. I’m currently debating between the classic 85mm focal length and maybe something a bit longer like a 105mm. I’ve heard amazing things about the Nikon 85mm f/1.4G for that legendary "creaminess," but I’m also curious if the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art or even the Nikon 105mm f/1.4E would be a better fit for such a high-res sensor. Sharpness is obviously a priority, but I really care about the character of the bokeh and how the glass handles skin tones. My budget is somewhat flexible, but I'd like to stay under $1,800 if possible.

I’m feeling a bit stuck on which one offers the best balance of rendering and autofocus reliability for professional work. For those of you who regularly use the D850 for portrait sessions, which prime lens has become your go-to "must-have" in your kit?

Oh man, I feel u on that res! • Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED: Sharpest, but unfortunately pricey.
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G: Honestly not as good as expected for 45MP. Go 105mm, gl!

> I’m looking to step up my portrait game and want to invest in a high-quality prime lens... Quick question - how do you feel about lens weight? The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED is the sharpest but pricey, while the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is the best value for 45MP. However, be careful with AF on the Sigma; the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G is more reliable but softer. Honestly, I've had bad luck with third-party AF before... it can be risky. Do you shoot handheld mostly?

Adding my two cents here! If you want to play it safe with the budget and still get incredible results, you have to look at these:

  • Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G is a total steal and honestly holds up way better on the D850 than people expect!
  • Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD is fantastic if you want that extra stability since the high res sensor shows every tiny bit of camera shake. I really love how these perform for the price. Speaking of that resolution tho, wow, my storage situation is a mess now! I just spent the weekend moving everything to a Western Digital 12TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive because my laptop was literally screaming. It is amazing how fast 45MP adds up when you are shooting raw... i definitely spend more time looking at folder sizes than actually editing photos lately. My cat actually knocked over one of my older drives last week and i almost had a heart attack... but yeah, go for the 1.8 glass and save the extra for some fast cards!
