Hi everyone, I'm just getting started with landscape photography and looking to buy my first dedicated landscape lens.

What focal length would you recommend for a versatile landscape lens - something wide angle like a 16-35mm or more of a midrange zoom like a 24-70mm? I'm trying to decide between those two ranges.

Also, is it worth spending more for an f/2.8 aperture or is f/4 sufficient for landscapes? Any specific lens recommendations for a beginner on a budget?

Thanks in advance!

16-35mm lens or 20mm prime lens.

In my opinion, it's hard to beat a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom as an all-around great lens for landscape photography, even for beginners. The focal length provides flexibility, from wide-angle to short telephoto, to cover a variety of scenes. The constant f/2.8 aperture is useful in low light. While more expensive than variable aperture zooms, it's a lens that can grow with you as you develop your skills. Most major brands make excellent 24-70mm options.

I would prefer 16-35mm lens.

Don't forget about the humble 50mm prime! While not traditionally considered a landscape lens, a "nifty fifty" can be an excellent choice for beginners. It's affordable, lightweight, and forces you to move around and really think about your compositions. Plus, it's great for isolating elements in the landscape and creating panoramas.

For beginner landscape photographers, here are the essential lens recommendations that will help you capture stunning natural vistas without breaking the bank.

Full-Frame Camera Options
The Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM provides excellent wide-angle coverage with image stabilization, making it perfect for handheld landscape shots. For Nikon users, the Nikon AF-S 16-35mm f/4G ED VR offers similar capabilities with vibration reduction. Sony shooters should consider the Sony FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS for its sharpness and optical stabilization.

APS-C Budget-Friendly Choices
The Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM is an exceptional value for Canon APS-C cameras, providing ultra-wide coverage equivalent to 16-29mm on full-frame. Nikon users can opt for the Nikon AF-P DX 10-20mm f/4.5-5.6G VR, while Sony APS-C shooters should consider the Sony E 10-18mm f/4 OSS.

Versatile Kit Lens Alternative
The Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD offers professional-grade optics at a reasonable price for Sony full-frame cameras, providing both wide-angle capability and excellent low-light performance.

Key Considerations
Focus on ultra-wide to wide-angle focal lengths (10-35mm equivalent) for capturing expansive landscapes. Image stabilization helps with handheld shooting during golden hour when tripods aren't always practical. These lenses provide the foundation for learning landscape composition and techniques before investing in more specialized glass.
