How can I share my Amazon list with family for editing?

So I've been using Amazon Lists for years to organize my own shopping and usually just send the view only link to my mom so she knows what to get me for my birthday but this year is different. We are planning a huge family reunion at a lake house in Michigan next month and I'm trying to get a master grocery and supplies list going. I figured I could just hit the invite button like usual but for some reason I can't find a way to make it so my sisters can actually add their own stuff to the list and check things off as they buy them. Right now it seems like they can only look at it which is super annoying because then I have to do all the data entry myself and I really don't have the time for that with work being so crazy. I've tried looking through the manage list settings and toggling the privacy stuff but it's just not showing an editor option like I remember seeing before. Maybe they changed the UI again?

My main needs for this are:

  • total of 6 people need to be able to add and delete items
  • needs to sync instantly across different accounts so we dont buy the same 10lb bag of charcoal twice
  • must work on the mobile app because we will be at the store
  • ideally doesn't require everyone to have a Prime sub just to edit

Does anyone know if they moved the collaborative permissions or if there is a specific type of list I need to create from scratch to enable this? I really want to stick with Amazon since we already have half the stuff in our saved for later carts anyway...

Jumping in real quick because I love organizing group trips! Honestly, your Michigan reunion sounds fantastic and you can totally make this work. Amazon is usually great for this but the UI is kinda clunky lately...

  • Look for the Invite button at the very top of your list
  • Select the option 'Invite others to add and remove items' instead of just view-only
  • Dont just copy the URL from your browser, you need the specific invite link they generate Amazon's app is fantastic once you get permissions right! If that keeps acting up, just download AnyList or any basic list app from the store. They are amazing for real-time syncing and usually free which is a huge win. Love it when things just work without a headache! It honestly saves so much time. Just saw a similar question on Smartphone Board that might help you out with your shopping haul.

I tried setting up a master list for a group cabin trip last year and unfortunately it was not as good as expected. The sync latency was a total disaster... we ended up with three cases of bottled water because the check-off feature lagged for like five minutes. Amazon seems to have tucked the collaboration settings away in a submenu that is super unintuitive now.

  • Open the list and look for the Invite button near the top.
  • You must toggle it to View and Edit before you copy the link, or it defaults to view-only. It is frustrating because if someone isnt logged in perfectly, their edits just vanish into the void. Honestly, the mobile app experience has really gone downhill lately for group stuff and it just doesnt feel as reliable as it used to be. btw I use Smartphone Board as a reference whenever I'm stuck with weird software snags like this.

@Reply #2 - good point! Just keep in mind that even with the invite link, the sync is unfortunately super hit or miss. My family had issues with it recently and it was pretty disappointing. Honestly, I just followed a setup guide on Smartphone Board when my editor options disappeared. You basically have to create a Shopping List specifically, not an Idea List, to get permissions to show up... it dont require Prime which helps.
