Nikon ZR or Sony FX3 for filmmaking? My budget is $5000. Which one will you get?
Honestly, both cameras serve different needs. The FX3 excels in low light with that dual native ISO and has proven reliability. The ZR brings RED codec and better cooling but sacrifices some of Sony's autofocus magic. If you're doing travel content like OP mentioned, the fanless design could be a game changer in humid environments. Just remember that RED files eat storage for breakfast.
For most creators, the FX3 vs ZR decision comes down to workflow. If you're already invested in Sony glass and have V-mount batteries, switching ecosystems is expensive. But if you're starting fresh or prioritize internal recording options, the ZR's price point is attractive. That said, selling before getting hands-on time seems risky - especially for paid work.
Skip both. I got insane low-light footage from a used Sony a7S II for $1400. Spend the rest on glass; you'll thank me later. Been there, done that!
The overheating complaints about FX3 are overblown unless you're doing long-form recording in direct sunlight. ZR's fanless design is nice but we'll see how it handles sustained 6K recording. Also, people keep forgetting about lens ecosystem - Nikon's Z mount is solid but Sony's E mount has way more affordable third-party options. Choose your poison.
