im honestly so fed up with my kit lens being mushy at the edges for my R6II. i have a trip to Glacier in two weeks and im freaking out that my shots will look cheap. i need something crisp.
what should i buy?
Regarding what #1 said about "I have been very satisfied with the reliability..." - i totally agree. It really saved my skin when i was hiking through Olympic National Park and got caught in a massive downpour for three hours. My gear was soaked but kept clicking. Just be a bit careful if you go with the Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM. It is way sharper than your kit lens, but you might want to consider that at 14mm it relies heavily on digital correction to fix vignette and distortion. I would suggest making sure your R6II has the latest firmware so it handles those profiles perfectly in-camera. Also, Glacier has killer reflections on the lakes, so maybe grab a Hoya 77mm Fusion One Next Circular Polarizer to cut the glare. It fits that lens perfectly and makes the alpine water look incredible. Better to be safe than sorry with those edges tho.
I have been very satisfied with the reliability of L glass for landscapes. You definitely need that weather sealing for Glacier.
Unfortunately, rushing a purchase right before a trip is risky. Ive had issues with quality control where even expensive glass arrived with soft corners, which is a nightmare if you dont have time to swap it. To help narrow it down:
chiming in here because i totally feel your pain with the kit lens mush!! its the worst when you get home and see those corners are basically soup. swapping my old glass for the 14-35mm f/4L right before a big mountain trip was life changing. like seriously amazing! people often obsess over the f/2.8 version but honestly for landscape you are usually stopped down to f/8 or f/11 anyway. that extra stop of light is just dead weight in your pack when youre hiking glacier. the weight difference is massive and my back definitely thanked me. plus it takes 77mm filters which are way cheaper and easier to swap than the huge 82mm ones. the lens uses special UD elements that basically eliminate that blur you see on the edges of the kit lens. mine survived a total sleet storm last winter and it didnt even flinch... the reliability of the L seals is just fantastic for peace of mind. since the R6II has such killer IBIS you can handhold this thing at slow shutter speeds and it still stays tack sharp. youre gonna love how crisp those edges stay even at 14mm. it makes the scenery look so much more epic!
