Need a camera for my trip this Friday, budget is firm at $500. I saw people saying the Lumix G7 is the king but then others say its too old for 2024. Then I looked at the Sony a6000 but the lenses seem so expensive. Im just confused on which one actually works for a total noob... help?

TL;DR: Recommendation is the G7.

To add to the point above: I actually started with that Sony setup and it was such a letdown. The menu system is a total mess and honestly, navigating it while on a trip was just frustrating. If you want something that doesnt feel like a relic from a museum, maybe look at these instead:

  • Canon EOS M50 Mark II with 15-45mm Lens
  • Basically the gold standard for beginners. The Dual Pixel AF is way more reliable than the G7's contrast hunting.
  • Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III with 14-42mm EZ Lens
  • The 5-axis stabilization is insane for this price. My shaky hands ruined so many shots on older cameras without it. Ngl, that 16MP sensor on the G7 is pretty weak for 2024. If you plan on cropping your travel photos at all, you're gonna notice the lack of detail. Getting a 24MP sensor makes a massive difference for clarity when you're editing later.

Agreed Sony menus are rough. The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV with 14-42mm is super reliable for travel, while Nikon Z30 with 16-50mm Lens is very straightforward. Both are solid for your trip!
