Im honestly so frustrated right now because I’m trying to find a decent camera for my trip to Zion next month but everything I see online is either way too expensive or has like a million confusing specs. My budget is strictly $500 because thats all I saved up from my summer job and I just wanna take some clear photos that look better than my old phone.
I was looking at some Canon ones because the name sounds familiar but then people start talking about mirrorless vs dslr and i literally have no idea what that even means... sorry if this is a really dumb question but is there actually a good camera for that price or am I just stuck with my crappy phone?
Honestly youre definitely not stuck with your phone. $500 is a tight spot for brand new gear, but the used or refurbished market is where you will find the best value. Mirrorless is just newer tech thats lighter and smaller than those old chunky DSLRs... basically perfect for hiking Zion since you wont be carrying five pounds of plastic. If you want something simple, check out the Canon EOS M50 Mark II Mirrorless with 15-45mm Lens. Its got a 24.1MP APS-C sensor which is way larger than any phone sensor, so you get actual depth and detail in those canyon shots. Another killer option is the Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless with 16-50mm Lens. Its an older model but the autofocus system is still super snappy for the price.
To add to the point above: I love my Sony Alpha a6000 with 16-50mm Lens! I grabbed a refurbished one for reliability and the photos are fantastic! Only buy from reputable dealers tho.
Like someone mentioned, mirrorless is light, but I found Nikon D3500 with 18-55mm VR Lens works better. The 1550-shot battery and APS-C sensor are decent specs for a Zion trip, tbh.
