So Im heading to Japan this October and really need to upgrade from my phone but my budget is strictly $1000 for the body and a lens. I spent a few hours looking at the Sony a6400 because everyone says the autofocus is magic but then I saw the Fuji X-T30 II and it just looks so much better?

My logic was that the Sony would be easier but people keep saying the menus are a nightmare and I dont want to be fiddling with settings while Im trying to see the sights. Then theres the Nikon Z50 but is the lens selection actually good for travel? Im just kinda stuck on whether the vibe of the Fuji is worth the potential headache of the Sony...

Youre gonna have an absolute blast in Japan! I did a two-week trek from Tokyo down to Osaka last year and honestly, the camera you pick makes such a huge difference when youre walking 20k steps a day. I went through the same dilemma and ended up snagging the Fujifilm X-T30 II with XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ Lens because those film simulations are basically magic for travel photos. The colors are amazing and you dont even have to edit them, which saves so much time! Here is why I think the Fuji wins for your specific trip:

  • The film sims make Japan look like a literal movie scene right out of the box.
  • Physical dials mean you never have to touch those nightmare menus everyone talks about.
  • Its tiny enough to fit in a small sling bag while you eat street food in Dotonbori. If you really want to save some cash for extra sushi, definitely check out the Sony a6400 with 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens too. The autofocus is legendary, like it literally never misses a face. But tbh, the Fuji vibe is just so perfect for Japan. I spent way too much time fiddling with my old Sony menus on my first trip and felt like I missed the moment. Go with the Fuji and just enjoy the scenery! It fits right under that $1000 mark if you find a good bundle deal.

In my experience, the Canon EOS R50 with RF-S 18-45mm f4.5-6.3 IS STM is your best bet. Its technically superior for travel ergonomics and way cheaper, leaving you more cash for Japan.

Just saw this and I definitely agree that saving cash for the trip itself is the smarter move. In my experience, people often ignore the technical reality of hidden costs when sticking to a strict budget. Remember to account for:

  • Spare batteries
  • High-speed storage
  • A decent strap Spending your entire $1000 on just the body and a kit lens usually leaves you frustrated when you run out of juice mid-day.
