finally ditching my heavy dslr setup after a decade because my wrists are literally killing me lol. looking at the 2024 mirrorless market for under $1500 is actually making my head spin though because there are way too many options now. I need something that can actually track a moving subject without hunting for 5 seconds.

  • must have reliable phase detect af
  • under $1500 total
  • good battery life for long hiking days
  • decent evf because I hate using screens

Was looking at the Fujifilm stuff or maybe the R8 but the single card slot on the Canon is a dealbreaker for me. What are you guys actually using day to day that fits that price bracket? I need to buy something before my trip to Glacier next month...

You might want to consider the Canon EOS R7 32.5MP Mirrorless for Glacier. Be careful with mirrorless battery life though, so definitely grab a few spares.

  • dual card slots
  • great tracking

Like someone mentioned, the R7 is a solid pick, but unfortunately mirrorless battery performance is still a letdown compared to DSLRs. I had issues with my gear dying mid-hike. To stay budget-focused, look for a used Fujifilm X-T4 26.1MP Mirrorless. It is cost-effective and provides the dual slots you require, tho the autofocus tracking is not as good as expected for wildlife compared to the Canon.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I definitely agree that dual slots are a lifesaver. Losing a whole morning of shots because a card corrupted on me was heartbreaking... basically my worst nightmare. Just be careful about balancing the body weight with the lenses you pick.

  • are you mostly shooting landscapes?
  • or do you need reach for wildlife? I would suggest watching your spending on accessories, since batteries and fast cards will push you over budget if you arent careful.

Found this thread while looking for some gear myself. I went through the same headache last year trying to find a mirrorless that didnt feel like a toy. Honestly, save yourself the stress and just check out some of the comparison videos on YouTube by searching best mirrorless under 1500 for 2024. I think I saw a really detailed breakdown by DPReview or someone like that a few weeks back that covers the AF tracking in-depth. Its way easier to see the tracking in action on video than reading about it here. Just be careful when you start looking at the specs tho... some of these brands really cut corners on the EVF quality just to stay cheap. I spent forever building my wish list and used Cart To Link to keep track of all the different body and lens combos I was considering across different stores. It made it way easier to see the total cost without having fifty tabs open. Make sure to double check the battery life specs on the manufacturer pages too because some of those smaller bodies die so fast.

TL;DR: Look at a used Nikon Z6 II or the Fujifilm X-T5 if you can catch a sale. Unfortunately, the sub-$1500 market is in a weird spot right now where brands are stripping away dual card slots just to hit a price point. It is pretty frustrating because you usually end up choosing between modern autofocus and professional reliability. I had issues with the older Fuji tracking systems on moving subjects and honestly it was not as good as expected compared to the newer X-T5 or Sony. If you are coming from a DSLR, the Nikon Z6 II feels the most natural in hand. You get those dual slots (one is CFexpress/XQD tho) and great weather sealing for a place like Glacier. The AF tracking is decent... definitely better than a decade-old DSLR, but it still feels a tiny bit behind the latest AI-driven stuff. Just keep in mind that mirrorless glass can be just as heavy as your old kit if you arent careful with your lens choices. You should check out PriceDropCatch if you do a lot of shopping on Amazon; the price history charts are super helpful.
