So my Nikon D7100 finally gave up the ghost last week—shutter just jammed and the repair cost is basically what the cameras worth now. I figured this was the perfect excuse to finally go mirrorless, but honestly the more I look at the current market the more frustrated I get. I thought a $1000 budget would be plenty for a solid mid-range setup but everything seems so overpriced or built like a cheap toy nowadays. Ive been shooting for years so I know the basics, I shoot mostly manual and I really care about ergonomics, but it feels like every affordable mirrorless camera hides all the physical controls inside a touchscreen menu.

I have a trip to Japan coming up in three weeks and I really need to get something sorted before then. I'm mainly doing street photography and some landscape stuff, and since I live in Seattle I really need something that can handle a bit of mist or at least doesnt feel like itll short out if it gets damp. I've looked at the Sony a6400 but the tech feels ancient and the color science always looked a bit off to me. Then there's the Canon R10 but the lens selection for RF-S is just depressing unless I want to spend another grand on full frame glass.

Here is what I am actually looking for:

  • Budget: $1000 max for body and a lens (used is totally fine)
  • Physical dials for exposure settings
  • Fast autofocus for moving subjects
  • Decent low light performance for night shots in Tokyo
  • A viewfinder that doesnt look like a 2005 flip phone screen

I even checked out the Fujifilm X-S10 or X-T30 II but they are either sold out everywhere or being sold for way over MSRP because of the hype. Is there a hidden gem I am overlooking? Maybe a Lumix or an older Olympus? I just want something that feels like a real tool and not a gadget. Help me out before I just give up and buy another DSLR...

You seriously need to check out a used Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II 20.4MP Camera! It is built like an absolute tank and the weather sealing is legendary, so it will handle that Seattle mist without breaking a sweat. It feels like a real professional tool in the hand, not some plastic toy. The best part is you can find them used for around $500-600 now, which is an insane bargain for what you get! Pair it with a used Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens and you have a pro-level weather-sealed kit for under a grand. The autofocus is super snappy and the stabilization is so good you can basically take handheld long exposures at night in Tokyo without a tripod. It has all the physical dials you want and the EVF is actually great. It is way better than overpaying for a hyped-up Fuji right now!

In my experience, you should prioritize used flagship bodies over new entry-level models to get the build quality you want. A used Fujifilm X-T3 26.1MP Mirrorless fits your requirements much better than the X-T30 series.

  • Tactile dials for shutter and ISO
  • Proper weather sealing for Seattle mist
  • Solid low-light performance Pair it with a used Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS and youll have a versatile, professional-feeling setup for Tokyo under $1000.
