im honestly so fed up with my old DSLR right now. spent the whole morning trying to get some decent shots of my nephews soccer game and literally half the photos are blurry because the focus just keeps hunting and hunting and by the time it locks the moment is gone. it is so incredibly frustrating to miss those shots and honestly i am ready to throw this thing out the window and switch to something modern that actually works.

i dont have a huge budget though since i am just a hobbyist so i really need to stay under $800 for the body and maybe a kit lens if possible. i have been looking at stuff like the Sony a6400 or maybe the Canon R50 but i keep seeing conflicting reviews about which one actually sticks to peoples faces better. I mostly do street photography and pictures of my hyper dog at the park so speed is everything to me. i just want something where i can point it at a moving object and it actually stays sharp without me having to fight it every single time.

which budget mirrorless camera under $800 honestly has the absolute best autofocus for moving subjects?

i have been very satisfied with the Canon EOS R50 with 18-45mm Lens for shooting fast movement. it works well and honestly i have no complaints about how the focus sticks.

  • Canon R50: superior ai subject recognition for dogs and kids.
  • Sony a6400 24.2MP Mirrorless Camera: very reliable tracking but the tech is older. the canon is a safe, methodical choice that just stays sharp.

To add to the point above: honestly dont sleep on the Sony ZV-E10 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Lens just because its for vloggers. It has the same 425-point phase-detect system as the a6400 but usually costs way less. In my experience, that real-time tracking is literal magic for dogs. Check out the technical AF tests on DPReview if you want the actual performance data... it really shows the hit rate.
