My old DSLR just bricked and I leave for Italy next Tuesday so I need a replacement like right now. Budget is strictly $800 max.

Torn between the Sony ZV-E10 and the Canon R50 but cant decide if the Sony video features outweigh the Canons better grip. Which one should I grab before I fly out?

> Budget is strictly $800 max. I once dropped a camera in Rome because the grip was tiny. Be careful with the Sony ZV-E10 Mirrorless Camera 24.2MP since it doesnt have a viewfinder; seeing the screen in the sun is a nightmare. You might want to consider the Canon EOS R50 Mirrorless with 18-45mm Lens or maybe the Nikon Z30 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Lens. Are you shooting mostly stills or video?

Im satisfied with the Sony ZV-E10 24.2MP APS-C Mirrorless because it fits the budget easily.

  • 425 phase-detect points
  • 11 fps burst rate Works well, plus your pasta shots will be sharp!

Quick reply before my lunch break ends. Honestly, go with the Canon R50. I was in your exact shoes before flying to Spain last summer, totally stressed about the $800 budget limit. Picked up the R50 and I've been incredibly satisfied with how it performed, absolutely no complaints. Here is my take on why it works so well for keeping costs down:

  • You can usually find the R50 kit on sale with money left over for a faster SD card and a spare battery. Traveling without a backup battery is risky.
  • The ergonomics mean you dont need to buy an extra extension grip, saving you another 30 or 40 bucks.
  • The out-of-camera colors are great so you wont need to buy expensive editing software right away. I actually just used Cart To Link the other day to send my whole budget travel packing list to my cousin who is getting into photography. Saved me so much time tracking down the cheaper accessory links. Definitely grab the Canon and enjoy Italy!

@Reply #3 - good point! honestly man, i am feeling your pain so hard right now. having a camera brick right before a flight is literally my worst nightmare. i had a shutter fail on me the night before a trip once and i was basically a wreck trying to find a replacement. it is such a massive stress when you should be getting excited for italy. i have been pretty satisfied with the r50 because it feels like a tank compared to the others. the sony zv-e10 works well for vlogging but it feels kinda like a toy in my hands, and i would be constantly worried about bumping it in a crowded piazza. i have also been happy with the nikon z30 reliability, though finding glass for it last minute is a total headache. just a brutal situation to be in... the anxiety of gear failure is real.
