Which mirrorless camera actually gives you the best bang for your buck under 800 bucks because I am honestly reaching my breaking point with my old gear. My Nikon D3400 is basically a paperweight at this point and the shutter keeps sticking during the most important moments which is just great when you're trying to take photos of your kids or literally anything that moves. I spent like a hundred dollars trying to get it cleaned and fixed last year but it's happening again and I am just done with mirrors and clunky bodies and this prehistoric autofocus that hunts for ten seconds before missing the shot entirely.
I have a trip to Chicago coming up in less than three weeks and I really dont want to be lugging around this brick that doesnt even work half the time. I've got a hard limit of $800 for the body and hopefully a kit lens because I cant afford to drop two grand on a Sony A7 series or whatever even though everyone says they're the gold standard. I mostly do street photography and some family stuff but I need something that wont make my neck ache after an hour of walking around the city.
I've been looking at a few options but I'm getting so overwhelmed with the specs and everyone online seems to have a different opinion:
- Canon R50 (seems cheap but maybe too plastic-y?)
- Sony A6400 (older but the autofocus is supposed to be legendary?)
- Fujifilm X-T30 II (looks cool but is it actually better or just pretty?)
Honestly I'm just tired of the research and seeing a perfect shot then hearing that weird grinding sound from my current lens motor. It's so discouraging when you want to enjoy a hobby but the tools are fighting you every step of the way. I just want something reliable that wont fail me the second I step off the plane in Illinois. Is there a clear winner in this price bracket or am I just gonna have to settle for something mediocre because my budget isnt high enough...

I would suggest the Sony Alpha a6400 with 16-50mm Lens. Its your best value because the autofocus is incredibly reliable for shooting kids. You might want to be careful with the Canon EOS R50 with RF-S 18-45mm Lens since the lens ecosystem is limited. Sony's system allows for much cheaper third-party upgrades later, making it the more cost-effective choice for your $800 limit.

To add to the point above: I might want to suggest being a bit careful jumping straight into the Sony ecosystem just for the AF. I know everyone says the Sony Alpha a6400 with 16-50mm Lens is the gold standard, but coming from that Nikon D3400, you might find the Sony menus and ergonomics kind of a nightmare. Tbh, it feels more like a computer than a camera sometimes, which is the last thing you want to deal with when you're trying to actually enjoy a vacation. I would suggest taking another look at the Canon EOS R50 with RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM despite the plastic feel you mentioned. I get the concern about it feeling a bit cheap, but that lightweight build is a lifesaver when you're trekking through Millennium Park for a whole weekend. The AF system in that little thing is actually newer than what is in the a6400 and it is scary good at sticking to kids' eyes. It makes photography fun again because you aren't fighting the gear every single time you press the shutter. Just a heads up though, make sure to grab a spare Canon LP-E17 Lithium-Ion Battery Pack before you get on that plane. Mirrorless bodies drink power way faster than your old DSLR ever did, and nothing ruins a trip like a dead battery right when the sun is setting over the skyline. Since you're already used to Nikon, maybe see if you can find a deal on a Nikon Z50 with NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR too... the transition might be easier on your brain since the menus will feel familiar. Just make sure whatever you pick feels comfortable for a long walk!
