honestly im just so done with my current setup it keeps overheating after like ten minutes of 4k and ive missed so many good shots lately because of it. like i was trying to film some stuff for my brothers business last weekend and the camera just died on me in the middle of a really important interview segment and i just felt so unprofessional standing there waiting for it to cool down while everyone stared at me. its an older sony a6300 and i know people love them but man the thermal management is just trash in my experience and i cant deal with it anymore. its honestly making me want to quit filming altogether because i spend more time worrying about the gear than actually being creative.

so im finally ready to drop some actual cash on something that wont betray me when the sun comes out or when i record for more than five minutes. i have a hard budget of $1500 for the body and maybe a kit lens or just one decent prime because im selling off my old gear to fund this and thats all the savings i got right now. im mostly doing travel vlogs and some sit down youtube stuff but i want it to look crisp you know? i need that 10-bit color if possible because i want to start learning how to grade properly.

here is what im looking for specifically

  • needs to have 4k video that actually looks good and doesnt have that massive crop factor that some of the cheaper canons have
  • reliable autofocus because i usually film myself and cant always check if im in focus
  • decent battery life or at least the ability to power it via usb-c while i record
  • no overheating issues please for the love of god i need to be able to record for at least thirty or forty minutes straight
  • ibis would be nice but i guess i can use a gimbal if i have to though it adds so much weight to my bag when im traveling

ive been looking at the fujifilm xs20 because people say the video specs are insane for the price but i also see people talking about the lumix gh6 or maybe a used s5ii if i can find a deal? i live in a pretty rural area in oregon so i have to order everything online and cant really go into a shop to test them out which makes me even more nervous about picking the wrong one again. i need to have this figured out by next month before my trip to europe. what are you guys using that actually holds up in the heat and gives that professional look without breaking the bank? i just need something that works...

To add to the point above: I switched to the Panasonic LUMIX S5II Full-Frame Mirrorless for those hot outdoor wedding gigs and its been amazing! Zero shutdowns. Quick tip: always use fast V60 SD cards!

Regarding what #2 said about the S5II, I totally agree that heat management is key, but I've been really satisfied with the Fujifilm X-S20 Mirrorless Camera lately. It shoots 10-bit 4K and hasn't overheated on me yet, even during longer segments. The IBIS is super helpful for travel and it fits your budget perfectly with a lens. It basically solved all the issues I had with my older gear.

> the camera just died on me in the middle of a really important interview segment Always prioritize bodies with active cooling fans for interviews. Most compact mirrorless options dont have proper heat dissipation, which inevitably leads to thermal shutdown during long 4K recordings.
