Okay so I just got a Nikon Z8 and I am completely overwhelmed. I have a big trip to Yosemite in literally two weeks and I really want to take some amazing landscape photos but I have no idea where to start with lenses. Everyone online says I should get a prime lens for the best sharpness but I dont even know what focal length is best. Sorry if this is a super dumb question I am a complete beginner.

I need to order something fast because of the trip. Here are my constraints:

  • Budget: I spent way too much on the camera so I only have about 800 dollars left for a lens.
  • Use case: Shooting big mountains, valleys, and forests. I want those really wide dramatic views.
  • Preference: Not too heavy since I will be hiking a lot.

Which prime lens should I actually buy? Should I look at a 20mm or a 24mm or is there something else I am missing? I am just so lost and running out of time to make a decision...

^ This. Also, are you planning on shooting any astro while youre there?

In my experience, the 20mm focal length is the optimal choice for capturing Yosemite's scale. 24mm often feels too narrow when youre on the valley floor.

  • Purchase the Nikon NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S. It provides professional sharpness while remaining portable for hiking.
  • Buy used to stay within your 800 dollar budget. You wont regret having that extra field of view.

Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.
