Recommended wide-angle lenses for vlogging on Sony a7C?

Hey everyone! I finally made the jump to full-frame and picked up a Sony a7C. I absolutely love how portable it is, but I’m struggling to find the perfect wide-angle lens for vlogging. I’ve been using the 28-60mm kit lens, but it just isn’t wide enough when I'm holding the camera at arm's length, especially once you factor in the slight crop from using Active Stabilization.

I’m really looking for something that balances image quality with the compact form factor of the a7C. I don't want a massive lens that makes the whole setup front-heavy or awkward to hold on a small tripod or shooting grip. Ideally, I’m looking for something in the 16mm to 20mm range. I've been eyeing the Sony 20mm f/1.8 G because of the reviews, but I’m also curious if third-party options like the Tamron 17-28mm or the Sigma 16-28mm might be too bulky for this specific body. Fast and silent autofocus is a must since I'll be filming myself on the go.

Has anyone here found a "sweet spot" lens that feels right on the a7C without sacrificing that beautiful full-frame look? I’m open to both primes and zooms—what would you recommend for a lightweight, travel-friendly vlogging setup?

For your situation, honestly, I think you should skip the heavy zooms and stick to a lightweight prime to keep that a7C feeling balanced. I've been shooting with this body for a few years now, and heavy glass *really* ruins the ergonomics on a small shooting grip like the Sony GP-VPT2BT Shooting Grip. If you wanna save some cash without losing that beautiful full-frame look, here are the best budget-friendly options I've found: * Samyang AF 18mm f/2.8 FE: This thing is basically weightless and costs around $250-300. It's plenty wide even with the Active Stabilization crop, and the AF is actually pretty decent for vlogging.
* Tamron 20mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2: You can usually snag this for under $230. It's super sharp, though the AF motor is a bit noisier than the Sony G series.
* Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G: Honestly the gold standard, but even used it's like $700+. Personally, the Samyang is the real sweet spot for travel cuz you barely feel it in your bag. Plus, spending less on the lens means more money for actual trips, right? gl!

Seconding the recommendation above. In my experience, vlogging ergonomics depend entirely on the center of gravity. If the rig is front-heavy, ur wrist is gonna hurt after five minutes. I think those small f/2.8 ultra-wide primes from Samyang or Sony's G-series are the sweet spot. They're realy affordable, around $300-$400, and staying under 250g is basically the key for long-term value and comfort!!

Quick question - do you mostly vlog handheld while walking or is it static?? Knowing if you REALLY need the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G speed vs a lighter f/2.8 helps weight/price tbh.

sooo i actually had a similar dilemma when i first got into this!! i spent like three weeks doing deep market research on every wide lens available cuz i was obsessed with finding the absolute BEST value for money. honestly, i've had a different experience than the guys suggesting those tiny f/2.8 lenses... i think sticking to those might actually be a mistake if you really want that "creamy" full-frame look you mentioned. those smaller ones can feel a bit flat sometimes. but before i suggest a different path, i gotta ask—what’s your hard budget for this? also, are you looking for the absolute lightest thing possible, or are you okay with a tiny bit more weight if it means getting that professional f/1.8 background blur? ngl the market is flooded with options from different brands right now, so knowing ur price limit helps a ton!!
