I've been using my A7R IV for long landscape shoots lately, and I'm really struggling with the battery life and ergonomics. I need something that feels solid for vertical shots and holds two batteries. Should I go for the official Sony version, or are brands like Meike actually reliable? What are your top recommendations for this series?

> Should I go for the official Sony version, or are brands like Meike actually reliable? yo, i feel u on this!! honestly, the Sony VG-C4EM Vertical Grip is the best technical choice cuz it matches the magnesium alloy build and weather sealing of your A7R IV perfectly. basically, the Meike MK-A7R4 Pro Battery Grip with Remote Control is okay, but i highkey recommend the Sony one for reliability. It holds two Sony NP-FZ100 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery units and feels way more solid... gl! 👍

Respectfully, I'd consider another option before dropping nearly 400 bucks on the official Sony gear. Not to totally disagree with the suggestion for the Sony VG-C4EM Vertical Grip because it's definitely the gold standard, but i've had a different experience using third-party alternatives for landscape work. Honestly, the price tag on the official grip is realy hard to swallow when you can get something like the Meike MK-A7R IV Pro Battery Grip for literally a quarter of the price. I've been running the Meike MK-A7R4 Pro Battery Grip on my A7R IV for over a year now. Technically, the Sony matches the magnesium build better, but unless you're shooting in a literal monsoon, the Meike holds up just fine. Plus, it comes with that built-in 2.4G wireless remote that handles timer and intervalometer functions. That is SO helpful for long exposure shots where you wanna avoid camera shake without buying extra remotes. If you're on a budget, the Neewer Vertical Battery Grip for Sony A7R IV is also a solid bet. Basically, you're paying for the weather sealing and brand name with Sony, but the high-quality composites on the Meike don't feel flimsy at all. I would suggest putting that saved cash toward another Sony NP-FZ100 Rechargeable Battery or a nice L-bracket. Just make sure to keep the contact pins clean... sometimes the third-party ones get a bit finicky if they get dusty. Hope that helps!!

TL;DR: Weather sealing is key for landscapes. What are your typical shooting conditions and budget? +1 to what was said earlier. Basically, grips shield internal circuitry from environmental hazards. This matters cuz landscapes are tough on gear. I totally agree about the high price, but you might want to consider how cheap builds fail in the rain. Are u shooting in extreme weather or sand? Also, make sure to tell us ur absolute max budget for the setup!
