im honestly about to lose it with my current setup and i need some real advice before i have a total meltdown. i’ve been trying to make this 24-70mm f2.8 work for my portrait sessions but the results are just so clinical and boring and lately its been missing focus on the eyes like crazy. i have a huge graduation shoot coming up in two weeks at the arboretum here in seattle and im panicking because the lighting is always so hit or miss and i need something that can actually handle low light and give me that creamy background everyone wants.

i tried using a cheap 50mm i borrowed from a friend but the autofocus was hunting so much i missed half the candid shots and the motor was so loud it was actually distracting the client. it was embarrassing. i have about $1100 to spend right now maybe $1300 if i skip out on some other stuff this month but i just cant afford to buy something that isnt going to perform. im looking for that perfect prime lens that just locks on and doesnt let go. i’ve been staring at the 85mm 1.8 because people say its fast but then i see the 85mm sigma art and people say its way sharper but then i hear its heavy as a brick and my wrists are already tired from holding the zoom all day.

then there is the 135mm but is that too long for general use? i just feel so overwhelmed by the options and the fear of picking the wrong one is keeping me up at night. i just want something that feels magical for portraits on my a7iv without being a total nightmare to carry around or use in the rain.

honestly every time i look at my raw files lately i just want to cry because the skin tones look off or the sharpness just isnt there when i crop in even a little bit. i’ve even thought about switching systems entirely but i know thats just the anxiety talking and i really do love the sony interface. i just need a lens that makes me feel confident again because right now i feel like a total fraud showing up to shoots with gear i dont trust. i just need to know what you guys are actually using in the field that doesn't fail you when the pressure is on and the light is fading fast. which prime lens is actually the gold standard for sony e-mount portraits right now?

Unfortunately, some of the heavier lenses people recommend arent as good as expected for long sessions. I had issues with focus hunting on third-party glass during arboretum shoots myself, which was just frustrating.

  • Sony FE 85mm f/1.8
  • Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM I eventually settled on the 50mm GM. Its technically superior and feels much safer for high-pressure graduation work where you cant afford to miss focus.

Over the years ive learned that reliability is everything. If you are panicking about focus, stick with native Sony glass to ensure the eye AF actually locks on when light gets tricky.

  • Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 is the safest bet for those grad shots. Its light, fast, and dead-accurate.
  • Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 is a great, reliable companion for wider candids. Native lenses just talk to the camera better. Youll feel way more confident once the gear stops fighting you.

In my experience, you should grab this lens:

Just saw this. Honestly, you might want to consider some technical factors before jumping into a purchase because the a7iv is sometimes picky about third-party drive speeds.

  • Are you looking for a lens that utilizes a dual linear motor system for maximum tracking speed, or is the slightly slower stepping motor tech okay for your pace?
  • Since you are in Seattle, do you need full internal weather sealing or just a basic rubber gasket at the mount? Be careful because cheap weather resistant claims often fail in actual PNW drizzle. I would suggest checking if your current zoom is actually failing or if its just a firmware sync issue first. Maybe try cleaning the electronic pins with some isopropyl alcohol to see if that fixes the eye-AF hunting before you spend the cash... sometimes a DIY cleaning fixes what looks like a hardware failure.

Regarding what #4 said about reliability, i disagree politely! 1. Purchase Samyang AF 85mm f1.4 II FE to save money.

  • Its amazing, weather-sealed, and superior to the basic 1.8!
