I recently upgraded to the Canon EOS R6, and while the eye autofocus is a game-changer, I’m still using my old EF zooms with an adapter. I really want to step up my portrait game and invest in some native RF glass to get that buttery smooth bokeh. I’m torn between the legendary 85mm f/1.2 L series and something slightly wider like a 50mm for more environmental shots. I mainly shoot outdoor lifestyle portraits, so low-light performance and fast focus are huge for me. Has anyone compared the more affordable non-L primes to the high-end glass? Which specific prime lens do you think gives the best character and sharpness for professional portraits on the R6?
> I’m torn between the legendary 85mm f/1.2 L series and something slightly wider like a 50mm well basically, prime lenses have a fixed zoom so they can have huge apertures for that blurry look. it matters cuz native RF glass talks to the R6 way faster than adapted lenses do!! i've been at this forever but i'm still cautious about big buys... i'd recommend the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM for lifestyle, but the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM is highkey the king for portraits. gl!
So basically the consensus is native glass is faster, but dont overspend!! The Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM ($199) and Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM ($599) are amazing, safer professional bets.
Noted!
Facts.
Respectfully, I'd consider another option before dropping $2,700 on L glass. Tbh, the non-L primes are total sleepers on the R6: • Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM ($599) - Bokeh is still buttery and it's way lighter for outdoor shoots.
• Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM ($199) - Honestly, it’s SO sharp for the price. The L series is heavy, but these native primes focus super fast anyway. gl!
