Hey everyone! I just finally picked up my first Canon DSLR (went with the EOS 90D) and I’m super excited to start shooting. It came with the standard kit lens, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the extra gear available. I want to build a solid foundation without wasting money on gimmicks. I’ve already put a high-speed SD card and a spare battery on my list, but what else is truly essential? I'm mainly interested in landscape and street photography. Should I prioritize a decent tripod or maybe a prime lens like the 'nifty fifty'? Also, are UV filters actually necessary for protection? I'd love to hear your recommendations on the absolute essentials for a new setup!

When I started with my first Canon, I bought way too much junk lol. Honestly, just grab the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM first. It’s a total game-changer for street shots! For your landscapes, a solid Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Lever Aluminum Travel Tripod is way more important than a UV filter. I learned the hard way that glass quality matters more than 'protection' filters. That prime lens will literally change how you see light!! gl

Quick question—are you on a tight budget or looking to invest long-term? Ur choice depends on market value vs. performance. Tbh, check these for street: - Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM: Best value/lightweight.
- Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art: Sharper/better crop focal length. Basically, the Sigma wins on glass quality, but the Canon is way cheaper. Lemme know ur budget! gl

Seconding the recommendation above for the 50mm—it’s seriously a must-have for street shots. But honestly, as someone who has unfortunately dropped gear before, I HIGHLY suggest focusing on the safety and reliability side of things first. You don’t want your shiny new 90D hitting the pavement because of a flimsy kit strap or getting a scratched front element. Regarding UV filters, they're actually super polarizing in the community, but for a beginner, I’d say they're essential for peace of mind. I once had a cheap filter literally shatter and scratch my lens coating, so please dont go for the generic brands. If you want protection without losing sharpness, look at these: 1. **Lens Protection:** Grab a Hoya 67mm Fusion Antistatic Next UV Filter. It keeps dust off and takes the hit if you bump into a wall while doing street photography.
2. **Screen Safety:** Pick up a Vello Screen Protector Ultra for Canon EOS 90D. It’s way better than a plastic film and keeps the touch screen from getting scratched up.
3. **Better Strap:** The neck strap that comes in the box is honestly pretty awful for long landscape hikes. I switched to the Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap and never looked back. It’s way more secure and doesnt chafe.
4. **Cleaning:** Seriously, get a Giottos AA1900 Rocket Air Blaster Large. DO NOT use your shirt to wipe the lens, I’ve ruined coatings that way and it's the worst feeling lol. Basically, focus on keeping your gear safe while youre learning the ropes!! ngl, its better to spend a bit more now than regret it later when something breaks. gl!!
