I finally treated myself to the Canon R5, but it’s quite a step up from my old DSLR! I’m mainly worried about keeping up with those massive file sizes and the battery drain during long shoots. Should I prioritize CFexpress Type B cards or extra LP-E6NH batteries first? Also, what are your favorite screen protectors or straps for this specific body?
Here's what I recommend: Oh man, congrats on the R5! I remember when I first got mine, I was blown away by the autofocus but totally terrified by the battery life haha. It's a total powerhouse but yeah, it's demanding.
1. CFexpress Cards: Market-wise, there's a huge gap between the big names. I did a ton of research and compared the ProGrade Digital 512GB CFexpress Type B Gold against the SanDisk 512GB Extreme PRO CFexpress Type B. Honestly? ProGrade is the winner for me. SanDisk is reliable but way overpriced for the speeds you get. The ProGrade Gold handles the R5's high-bitrate video and burst stills without a hiccup, and it's usually much cheaper per GB.
2. Straps: I've tried basically everything and it usually comes down to these two:
- Peak Design Slide Camera Strap: Best all-rounder. The anchor system is literally amazing for switching to a gimbal or tripod fast.
- BlackRapid Sport Breathe Camera Strap: Better if you're lugging around heavy RF lenses all day. It distributes weight way better, but it's kinda bulky in ur bag.
Personally, I love the Peak Design one for the R5 because it matches the sleek mirrorless vibe perfectly.
3. Screen Protection: Others already mentioned tempered glass, but look at the ULBTER R5 Screen Protector 0.3mm 9H Tempered Glass specifically. It's super thin and doesn't mess with the touch sensitivity at all, which is huge for the R5 menu system!
Basically, get at least one fast card first so u can actually use the 20fps burst, then grab those extra batteries. You're gonna love this camera... it's a beast! Enjoy!! 🥂
Curious about one thing: r u shooting video or stills? Knowing ur usage helps decide if a $130 Angelbird 512GB AV PRO CFexpress Type B SE is really the best value investment, don't u think?

+1 to what was said earlier. honestly, the Canon LP-E6NH Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery is the absolute first thing u should buy cuz this camera basically eats power for breakfast. I unfortunately tried some generic third-party batteries to save money and had issues with the camera shutting off randomly... it was realy frustrating and not as good as expected, tbh.
If ur worried about the budget, I'd say grab a solid screen protector like the ULBTER R5 Screen Protector 0.3mm 9H Hardness Tempered Glass too. It's super cheap insurance. I'd definately hold off on those pricey CFexpress cards until u actually need the speed for 8K video. I mean, high-speed SD cards work fine for most stills anyway, right?? just stay safe and stick with the official power stuff first. gl!
In my experience, id say extra batteries vs CFexpress... batteries win cuz the R5 drains so fast!! Pros: u wont get stuck mid-shoot. Cons: those cards are pricey anyway. Best choice is power first. Are u shooting mostly video or stills? And whats ur budget looking like? I always use a glass protector just to be safe tho... gl!!
Saved for later, ty!
Great info, saved!
Solid advice 👍
