Which external flash is most reliable for Canon EOS cameras?

So I just got a Canon R10 for my sisters wedding next month in Chicago and I realized the little pop up flash is kinda bad for what I need. I have no idea where to start with the big ones you slide on top. Sorry if this is a total beginner question but which one actually works every time??

I saw some official Canon ones but my logic was why spend 400 dollars if a cheaper one does the same thing but then I read reviews saying the cheap ones overheat or dont talk to the camera right. Im super confused and only have about $150 to spend. Is there a specific model that is just like... solid? I dont want it to die in the middle of the cake cutting...

I am obsessed with gear safety because I once had a cheap flash actually melt its hot shoe mid-reception! Total disaster. For your $150 budget, these are amazing options:

I learned my lesson years ago when a generic flash fried itself mid-shoot. For your budget, the Godox TT685II-C Thinklite TTL Flash for Canon is a decent option. It connects reliably with the R10 and supports TTL. Ive used mine for long events without it failing. It runs on AAs, which is a bit slow compared to lithium batteries, but it doesnt overheat like the cheap clones do.

Wait, are you the main photographer or just taking some candid shots? Weddings are chaotic so you gotta be careful. Since money is tight, I would suggest looking at:

Coming back to this... basically if youre doing a wedding, the battery type is the most technical part to get right. Standard AA batteries get sluggish after 50 shots and then the flash takes forever to recycle. I suggest looking at these:

  • Godox V860III-C Li-ion Flash for Canon
  • This uses a proprietary lithium battery pack. You get way faster recycle times and it wont slow down mid-reception. It is slightly over your budget new, but you can find deals.
  • Godox V350C Compact Li-ion Flash for Canon
  • A bit smaller which fits the R10 body better. Still uses the lithium battery tech for speed and fits the $150 range well. Couple tips for reliability:
  • Lithium batteries stay consistent until they die, while AAs drop off power slowly.
  • TTL mode is your best friend for a wedding so you dont have to fiddle with settings during the cake cutting.
  • Make sure you seat it fully in the hotshoe or it wont talk to the camera right. Sticking with the Godox ecosystem is usually the sweet spot for reliability without paying the Canon brand tax.
