So i just bought this sony a6400 because everyone says its the best for travel but honestly i am staring at it right now and it feels so fragile and complicated lol. i am going to tokyo in about three weeks for a ten day trip and i have no idea what else i need to actually use it properly without breaking something or running out of space.
i basically spent most of my savings on the camera and the kit lens so i only have maybe 200 dollars left for extra stuff. i keep hearing about spare batteries because apparently these cameras die fast? and what about the memory card thingy... i bought one but i dont know if its enough for a whole week of photos and videos. do i need a special bag or can i just wrap it in a t-shirt and put it in my backpack?
i am also really scared of scratching the glass on the front or the screen on the back. i have never owned a real camera before so i am a total newbie and feel kinda dumb asking this but what are the absolute must-have things i should get before i get on the plane so i dont mess up my first big trip?
Quick reply before I head out. Totally agree that an insert is better than a t-shirt wrap. I am super satisfied using the Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap Black for Tokyo streets because it keeps the camera glued to my hand. Also, brand-wise, the Lexar Professional 1066x 128GB SDXC UHS-I is a solid alternative to SanDisk and usually cheaper. Grab some MagicFiber Microfiber Cleaning Cloths 6 Pack too since oily fingerprints on the glass really ruin shots.
Re: "Regarding those batteries #1 mentioned, im super satisfied..." - honestly original batteries are just too expensive. I use the Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack and Dual Charger for Sony NP-FW50 and they work great for way less money. Also, grab a Hoya 40.5mm UV Filter for that kit lens. It stays on forever and prevents scratches so you dont have to worry. Works well for me.
Regarding those batteries #1 mentioned, im super satisfied with my current setup after mine died mid-tour. Are you doing mostly video? My cheap padded wrap works well enough tho.
Late to the party here. Regarding your worry about the t-shirt wrap method... honestly, while it works in a pinch, it is not great for long-term reliability in a crowded place like Tokyo. I have been extremely satisfied using a dedicated padded insert like the Tenba BYOB 7 Camera Insert inside my regular backpack. It turns any bag into a safe camera bag for cheap, which keeps the camera from knocking against your water bottle or keys. Safety-wise, you really should look into a better strap. The stock one is thin and uncomfortable. I use the Peak Design Leash Camera Strap and the quick-connect system is a lifesaver when you want to switch to a wrist strap or just take it off quickly for tripod shots. It feels much more secure than the generic ones and makes the camera feel way less fragile when you are walking through dense subway crowds. Also, for reliability, dont forget a cleaning kit. If you get a smudge on your lens while eating ramen, a t-shirt will just smear the oil and might even scratch the coating. Get a Giottos Rocket Air Blaster Large and some decent microfiber cloths. Never use your breath or spit on the glass. If you want to learn more about keeping your gear clean, check out the DPReview forums or their basic maintenance guides. They have deep dives on how to handle mirrorless gear without breaking anything. Since you have a limited budget, these small utility items will actually save you more stress than another lens would right now... trust me, you dont want to be cleaning lens glass with a dirty shirt in the middle of a trip.
