Ive been a pro for years but this RF transition is giving me such bad gear anxiety. Got a high-end wedding in two weeks and I need a native prime fast. Budget is $2000. Is the 85mm 1.2 worth the weight or should I stick to the 50mm L series?
Really satisfied with these two:
Unfortunately, $2000 is tight for those L primes new. Are you open to used gear? Tried the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM but was disappointed by the slow focus. Lmk!
Honestly, making a gear switch right before a high-stakes wedding feels a bit risky to me. I would suggest you be careful about jumping into something too heavy if youre used to a specific workflow already. If you want my advice, just stick with the high-end L-series primes from Canon. You really cant go wrong with any of the professional glass in that lineup because they are built like tanks and the autofocus reliability is unmatched... I've always found that staying within the native ecosystem is the safest bet when you have a deadline. Make sure to test whatever you get for a few days before the shoot tho. I wouldnt want to deal with weight distribution issues during a ceremony. Just get any fast RF prime from Canon and you'll be fine, theyre all solid for professional work.
> Ive been a pro for years but this RF transition is giving me such bad gear anxiety. Man, you and me both... I am literally going through the exact same thing right now and it is honestly the worst. I have a massive shoot lined up for next month and I keep second-guessing if my current kit is enough or if I need to dive headfirst into the new mount. The pressure to stay current is so real, but I have been so satisfied with my Canon gear for a decade that it is hard to imagine switching to anything else. Basically, I feel like you just cant go wrong if you stay with the high-end professional stuff. I have looked at what the other brands are doing with their mirrorless lineups and, while they have some cool tech, I keep coming back to the fact that I have basically no complaints with how the pro-grade glass performs in the field. It just works well. If you just stick with the top-tier lenses from the main brand, you are gonna be happy. No need to stress about the tiny details or the weight too much. Ngl, I think we both just need to trust the brand we have been using for years. Just grab any of the high-performance primes from the pro line and go for it. It beats the anxiety of trying to learn a whole new system right before a big job, right? Just stick with the red ring stuff and you wont have any regrets.
