Trying to build a cheap PC for my brothers 16th birthday next month but Newegg is driving me nuts. I only have about $600 to spend and I've been refreshing their clearance and open box sections like a maniac for days. I read online that they update deals every Monday morning but then someone else said it happens at midnight PT every day. Neither seems right because the same crusty old motherboards have been sitting there for three days straight. Im in Chicago and keep staying up late to check but nothing changes. Is there a specific schedule for when they actually dump new stuff into the clearance section or am I just wasting my time?

Jumping in here because I went through this exact same thing last year when I was building a budget rig for my nephew. I was super stressed about the timeline too, but honestly, I ended up being really satisfied with how it turned out. I spent like three weeks checking the clearance section basically every hour. Tbh the midnight refresh thing is totally hit or miss because it seems to depend on when their warehouse staff actually scans the returned items back into the system. One time I found a killer deal on a GPU at like 3 in the afternoon on a random Thursday, so there really isnt a rhyme or reason to it most of the time. I was so happy when the parts finally arrived and everything worked well on the first boot. It was such a relief ngl. Just a quick question tho, are you looking for specific parts like a certain GPU, or are you hoping to find one of those motherboard and CPU bundles? Also, does that 600 dollar budget need to cover the monitor and keyboard too? Knowing that might help us help you narrow down what to prioritize while youre hunting. If you keep at it, youll definitely find something that works out. It just takes a bit of patience and some luck with the timing... keep your head up! Oh man, I totally feel your pain on this! Building a budget rig is such a rush but Neweggs clearance section can be a real tease. I totally agree that the Monday/midnight rule is basically a myth lately, it is so frustrating when youre on a deadline! Usually, the Shell Shocker deals flip at midnight PT, but the real open box gold usually drops mid-morning for me. Here is what I have noticed from my own crazy builds:
- Open box stock usually hits between 10 AM and 1 PM ET.
- Major clearance refreshes often happen on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
- Check the Combos section because they hide amazing discounts there that arent in clearance. You got this! $600 is plenty for a killer 1080p machine if youre patient. Keep grinding because that birthday build for your brother is gonna be fantastic!

What specific components are you missing? Open box is affordable but inconsistent, while refurbished is more reliable. You should probably install PriceDropCatch to see if those deals arent fake.
