Which telephoto zoom lens provides the best balance of performance and price for wildlife photography using a Canon 7D Mark II? I'm looking for something with a decent reach for capturing distant subjects, but I'm also on a budget. Are there any third-party lenses that offer comparable image quality and autofocus capabilities to Canon's L-series lenses in this category? What are your recommendations based on real-world experience?

Building on the earlier suggestion, i totally agree that those long zooms are the way to go! I spent way too much time obsessing over focus accuracy and reliability on my 7DII... honestly, having a lens that communicates perfectly with the body is everything. Here are a few more i love:

This is such an amazing value!! Its lighter than the Sport version and the autofocus is super snappy for birds in flight. Plus, you can use the Sigma USB dock to update the firmware, which feels much safer for long-term use if you're worried about compatibility.

If you can stretch the budget or find one used, buy it! The build quality is legendary and it is the most reliable option for the 7DII. Its sharpness is just fantastic and the image stabilization is top tier. Ngl, native glass usually handles the dual pixel AF better.

Basically a light version of the big zooms. Great if you dont want to carry a massive tripod everywhere! Still gets you plenty of reach on a crop sensor tbh. Definitely look into these, you are gonna have a blast with that camera!

For your 7D Mark II, a 150-600mm superzoom offers excellent reach and value. Sigma and Tamron make compelling options in this range, often providing comparable image quality to Canon L lenses at a lower price. The Tamron 150-600mm G2 is frequently recommended. While the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L is a sharp prime lens, it's now only available used and lacks the versatility of a zoom. Consider a used EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM for a budget-friendly starting point, though its reach is more limited.
