So I just grabbed a Mini 4 Pro for my trip to Glacier next month and Im down to my last $150 for gear. Im trying to figure out whats actually essential versus just fluff because I need to keep my pack light for the long hikes. Right now Im torn between getting the Freewell ND filter set or just sticking with the official DJI ones even though theyre pricier. My logic was that the Freewell ones have more options for the price but maybe the quality isnt there? Then theres the battery situation. Should I buy one more intelligent flight battery plus or get a decent carrying case? Im leaning toward the battery because running out of juice mid-hike would suck but then my drone is just floating loose in my bag... what do you guys think is the priority for a hiker?

Honestly, I was pretty let down by some of the official gear I bought early on. I grabbed the DJI Mini 4 Pro ND Filters Set ND16/64/256 thinking quality would be peak, but it was honestly a bummer. Only getting three filters is just not enough when the light changes constantly. Unfortunately, I ended up having issues with overexposure because the gaps between the ND levels were too big. I highly recommend the Freewell Bright Day 6-Pack ND Filters for Mini 4 Pro instead tho. They give you way more flexibility for way less cash and the optical quality is basically identical. Regarding the battery vs case debate... I had a terrible experience with a bulky carrying case on a trek last year. It was not as good as expected for long hikes and basically took up all my gear space. For Glacier, you really want that extra air time above everything else.

  • Go for the DJI Mini 4 Pro Intelligent Flight Battery Plus. Walking four miles to a viewpoint only to realize you have 15 percent battery left is the worst feeling.
  • Freewell filters are a must. The official ones are just too limited for what they cost.
  • Skip the fancy case. Just wrap the drone in a clean microfiber cloth and tuck it into a small Lowepro Dashpoint AVC 1 or even just a padded camera insert. Trust me, you wont regret the extra flight time, but youll definitely regret carrying a heavy box around.

Re: "Regarding what #1 said about "Honestly, I was..." - " I actually disagree with the idea of lugging a dedicated case for hiking. When youre doing miles of elevation, every ounce counts and those boxes are just dead weight. I usually just use a PGYTECH DJI Mini 4 Pro Protective Wrap and toss it in the top brain of my pack. Its plenty of protection and keeps the drone from getting scratched up. For the money, skip the huge filter sets. Since you're going to Glacier, you're gonna see a lot of water. A K&F Concept DJI Mini 4 Pro CPL Filter is way more essential for cutting glare on the lakes than a heavy ND. Regarding the power situation, maybe consider a Anker 737 Power Bank 24000mAh instead of just one extra battery. You can recharge the drone, your remote, and even your phone while you're taking a break. Its just more reliable for a long trip. Just make sure you pack it deep so the weight stays near your back... your shoulders will thank you later.

Regarding what #1 said about "Honestly, I was pretty let down by some..."

  • I'm totally on that page too. Those official sets are usually quite limited and way overpriced for what they actually offer. Youre gonna want more range when youre out in variable light. Since youre trying to stretch that last bit of cash, I have a few questions:
  • Are you going to be shooting in D-Log M or just sticking to standard color?
  • How many miles per day are you actually trekking? Costs add up fast, but weight is the silent killer on long hikes. Cases are bulky and might be overkill if you can just use a padded wrap in your bag. Extra batteries are great for peace of mind, but they definitely add heft. Knowing your workflow helps decide if the glass or the power is the real priority.

Wait, whats the terrain like there? I once lost a whole day of footage from a cheap card...
