Looking for a small Fujifilm for travel. Budget is $1000. What's the best compact option for image quality?
Tbh I've been doing a LOT of research on this lately because I'm also looking for a travel setup and the market is kinda crazy right now!! Like the prices for used gear are just going up and up and it's hard to know what's actually worth it but I think it basically comes down to these two: 1. Fujifilm X-E4: This one is SO pretty and it has that modern sensor so the colors are amazing but honestly they are getting really expensive on the used market because they discontinued them which makes no sense to me?? It's super thin if you use a pancake lens though so it's still really portable for a backpack.
2. Ricoh GR III: I know you specifically asked for a Fuji but I've been seeing everyone compare these two for travel and the Ricoh is WAY smaller like it actually fits in a jeans pocket which the Fuji basically doesn't. It doesn't have the Fuji film sims but it has its own cool recipes (at least that's what I've seen people say in reviews). Does anyone know if the Fuji autofocus is actually better than the Ricoh because I've heard mixed things and I just want something that works for quick street photos while I'm walking around??
Works great for me
Wait, before everyone keeps guessing, I have a few questions to narrow this down... its hard to recommend a best option without knowing your actual workflow.
I've tried many compact cameras for travel over the years. My best results, and I'm surprised to say this, came from the older Fujifilm X70. It's discontinued, so you'll find it used around $600, but that fixed 28mm lens is SHARP. The image quality punches WAY above its weight. Maybe check that out?
Honestly, sub-$1000 Fuji compacts have sensor limitations. Instead, consider a used Sony RX100 series (Mark IV or later). Larger sensor, similar size, often better value. I had issues with early Fuji X series performance, unfortunately.
Consider a used X-T20. Image quality is great, and you'll save a lot. Be careful buying used.
