Which lens should I grab as a do-it-all for my new X-T5 given I just blew most of my budget on the body itself? Im really torn between sticking with the classic 18-55mm f/2.8-4 or just going for a single prime like the 35mm f/2 to keep things light.
I have a trip coming up to Seattle in about three weeks and I really want to travel light, basically just one bag for everything. The 18-55 seems like the safe bet because of the zoom range but I keep hearing that the X-T5s 40mp sensor really needs the newer glass to shine and that old kit lens might not cut it anymore. On the other hand, the 35mm f/2 is so tiny and weather sealed which would be great for the rainy weather there, but I worry about missing shots because I cant zoom in.
I also looked at the 16-80mm f4 but its a bit chunky and I dont know if I want that much weight hanging off my neck all day while walking around Pike Place. My budget is capped at about $500 right now since I bought the camera used but it was still pricey. Is the image quality difference on the 35mm worth losing the flexibility of the zoom for everyday street stuff and travel photos? I keep going back and forth and need to decide before my flight...
Congrats on the X-T5, honestly such a killer camera even if it drains the wallet. I was in the exact same spot a few months back and ended up going with the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR for my daily driver. I have been really satisfied with how it handles the 40mp sensor... its plenty sharp and the autofocus is snappy as heck. Since you are heading to Seattle, the weather sealing is basically a requirement. I wouldnt want to baby an older lens in that mist. Here is why I think the prime is the move:
Building on the earlier suggestion about the 35mm, I honestly think you'll be happier with the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR. People worry way too much about the 40mp sensor tho... honestly. For Seattle, weather sealing is much more important for reliability. I got caught in a storm with mine last year and it didnt skip a beat... such a relief not worrying about water damage. Its super solid and fits your budget perfectly.
Re: "Congrats on the X-T5, honestly such a killer..."
Building on the earlier suggestion, it seems like that 40mp sensor is a bit of a double-edged sword when you're budget-constrained. Unfortunately, I've seen some MTF data showing the older kit glass just doesnt resolve the detail you're paying for. I think it was on a technical forum where they showed the corners getting really mushy on these newer high-res sensors. IIRC, the older optical designs just werent meant for this level of pixel density. It's honestly kind of a letdown because that standard zoom is so convenient for travel. Not sure if it's worth the trade-off, but for street stuff in Seattle, you're definitely gonna feel the lack of weather sealing if you go with the basic zoom anyway. It's a frustrating situation when the body outclasses the glass you can actually afford right now. Just dont expect miracles from older glass on that sensor.
