I finally pulled the trigger on the X-T5 after rocking an X-T2 for years and man that 40MP sensor is no joke. I'm taking it on a trip to Kyoto next month so I'm super hyped but I realized my old batteries and slow cards just aren't gonna cut it anymore. The IBIS is amazing but the body feels a bit small in my hand compared to what I'm used to. I've got about $400 left in my budget for some quality of life upgrades. What are the absolute essentials you guys recommend to really get the most out of this beast? I'm thinking maybe a specific grip or maybe those faster V90 cards...

To add to the point above: > Are you shooting video or just high-res stills? That determines if you actually need those expensive cards. Actually, even for stills, that 40MP sensor generates massive files that can choke older UHS-I cards pretty fast. In my experience, you dont necessarily need V90 for photography, but a V60 is the absolute minimum I'd suggest to keep that buffer moving. I've used the Lexar Professional 1667x 128GB SDXC UHS-II V60 for a while now and it manages the data flow decently without costing a fortune. Since you mentioned the body feels small, the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for FUJIFILM X-T5 4136 is a total lifesaver for ergonomics. It adds just enough height for a full hand grip and honestly makes the camera feel way more secure. Also, since you're coming from an X-T2, remember your old batteries are totally different. You'll want at least one spare Fujifilm NP-W235 Li-ion Battery because that high-res EVF and IBIS drain power way faster than the old tech did.

I was in Kyoto last November with my X-T5 and learned a few things the hard way about that 40MP sensor and the body ergonomics. Since youre coming from the X-T2, the most jarring change is definitely how the grip feels shallower. To fix the handling without adding too much bulk for travel, heres what worked for my setup:

  • Ergonomics: I tried the official fuji grip but settled on the SmallRig 4064 L-Shape Grip for Fujifilm X-T5. It costs around $40 and adds exactly enough height for your pinky to rest, plus the built-in Arca-Swiss plate is a lifesaver if you use a tripod at Fushimi Inari.
  • Power: Your old X-T2 batteries wont fit. You need the Fujifilm NP-W235 Li-ion Battery. They have 2200mAh capacity which is way better than the old ones, but shooting 40MP files drains them faster than youd think. I usually carry three.
  • Charging: Since you only get a cable in the box, get the Fujifilm BC-W235 Dual Battery Charger. It shows the percentage charge on a little screen which is super helpful when youre back at the hotel trying to prep for the next day.
  • Storage: If you want to avoid buffer lag during bursts, look at the SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II V60 256GB. V90 is overkill for most stills, but V60 handles those 80MB uncompressed RAW files much better than the old UHS-I stuff you likely have. The total for those is roughly $280-$300... leaves you some cash for a good strap or some matcha in Kyoto. Honestly, the V60 cards are the sweet spot for price per gigabyte right now. V90 is mostly for high bitrate video anyway.

TL;DR: Pinpoint your usage needs first. Im happy with how my setup works, no complaints here. Are you shooting video or just high-res stills? That determines if you actually need those expensive cards.
