Looking for recommendations on the best L-mount lens for astrophotography with my Lumix S5. I'm interested in shooting the Milky Way, star trails, and maybe some deep sky objects. Considering options like the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 Art or Panasonic 16-35mm f/4, but open to prime suggestions too. Budget is flexible around $1000-1800. What focal length and aperture would you prioritize for sharp stars and minimal coma?
For L-mount astro, you really can't go wrong with the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art. I've been using it on my S5 for over a year now and the corner performance is exceptional even wide open. The 14mm end gives you great framing for Milky Way shots, and f/2.8 is fast enough for most astro work. Yes it's pricey, but the optical quality justifies it.
Budget-conscious option here - consider the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm f/2.8. It's manual focus only but that's not an issue for astro work anyway. I picked one up for about $300 used and it's been fantastic on my fp. Sure, it's not as sharp in the corners as the expensive glass, but for the price difference, it's hard to beat. Just make sure to stop down to f/3.2 or f/4 for better corner performance.
100% agree
If you can stretch the budget, the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is phenomenal. That extra stop of light makes a huge difference for capturing faint nebulosity. The optical quality is outstanding and it's sharp wide open. I use it on my S1R and the detail I can pull out of 30-second exposures is remarkable. Heavier than some options but the results speak for themselves.
