Okay so I just bought the Panasonic S5II and honestly I am so stressed out right now. I saved up for like a whole year to get this for my trip to Tokyo next month but now that I have it in my hands I realized I literally have nothing else for it and the box was basically empty besides the camera and one battery. I dont even know what kind of memory card to buy because when I look online there are like fifty different types and some are really expensive and I dont want to break the camera or have it stop working while I am taking photos of the temples. My budget is super tight now because the camera cost so much so I probably only have like 250 or 300 dollars left for everything else. Do I need extra batteries? Does the battery last a long time? I saw something about a cage but I dont even know what that is for or if I need it if I am just doing travel photos and maybe some short videos of the city. I am so sorry if these are really dumb questions I just feel really overwhelmed by all the gear options and I dont want to waste money on stuff I wont use. What are the absolute most important things I need to get before I leave?

Building on the earlier suggestion, you definitely need reliable gear for such an amazing trip! For cards, the Sony TOUGH-M Series SDXC UHS-II 128GB is literally bulletproof for travel, but ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold 128GB is also fantastic and saves you cash.

  • Sony: indestructible, pricey
  • ProGrade: fast, better value Honestly, grab an official Panasonic DMW-BLK22 Battery too. Safety first so your camera dont brick in Japan!

Honestly it is pretty disappointing that Panasonic doesnt include a real wall charger anymore. Charging via the USB port is fine for some but I have had issues with the port feeling flimsy over time. Its super annoying to have your expensive camera stuck to a wall every night in a hotel room. Quick question tho... are you bringing a laptop to Tokyo to move files or do you need enough storage to last the whole trip without clearing cards? Since your budget is tight here is what I would look at:

  • Angelbird AV Pro SD MK2 V60 128GB: I have used these for a year and they are way more reliable than those Lexar cards which have had some bad QC issues lately. Super frustrating when a card fails in the middle of a shoot.
  • Nitecore UNK2 Dual Slot USB Travel Charger: This is a lifesaver for travel. It shows the actual battery health on a screen so you know if your cells are dying. Way better than just guessing.
  • SmallRig L-Shape Mount Plate for Panasonic S5II 4148: Skip the full cage for travel. This is way cheaper and makes the camera more comfortable to hold while protecting the bottom from scratches when you set it down on stone walls or temples. Dont buy a cage if you are just doing travel photos... its just extra weight you will hate after walking 20k steps a day in the heat.

Saw this today and totally get the stress. Tokyo is gonna be amazing tho so dont panic yet. Quick question before you spend a dime... are you planning on shooting a ton of high bit-rate 4K video or is this mostly for high-res stills? The video settings you use basically dictate which SD card you actually need so buying the wrong thing would be a waste of your limited budget. You really need to be careful with memory cards because the S5II can be picky with writing speeds.

  • SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB UHS-I V30 is super budget friendly and works for photos, but honestly it might choke on the cameras higher video settings.
  • Lexar Professional 1667x 128GB UHS-II V60 is a much safer middle ground for this specific camera and handles 4K files way better without costing a fortune. Regarding power, the S5II is pretty power hungry and Tokyo involves a lot of walking. One extra battery is basically mandatory but be wary of the super cheap clones you find on random sites.
  • Panasonic DMW-BLK22 Lithium-Ion Battery is the official one and its definitely the most reliable choice for a big trip.
  • SmallRig DMW-BLK22 USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery is a solid alternative because you can charge it directly with a standard phone cable, tho it might not hold a charge quite as long as the original Panasonic ones. Skip the cage entirely. Its just extra weight and you definitely dont need it for travel photos... just focus on the basics like cards and power first.
