so i just got the panasonic s1h because i want to start filming some short indie projects around london next month but man this thing is huge and heavy. ive been seeing these metal cage things people put on their cameras and i think i need one? or maybe a handle? i have like 300 pounds left to spend and im totally lost. my logic was that a cage would make it easier to hold but then i saw you can buy separate grips and now im wondering if they even work together. i looked at smallrig but then saw tilta and i dont know if brands matter or if they all just fit the same. sorry if this is a dumb question i just have no idea where to even start with this stuff...

I remember rigging my S1H for a shoot in London last year and honestly, the weight is no joke... if you dont balance it right, you'll feel it in your forearms fast. I once mixed brands and the alignment was slightly off, so be careful. I would suggest sticking to one ecosystem so the locating pins line up.

Like someone mentioned, the weight is tough to balance. I learned the hard way when a cheap handle almost slipped during a shoot. I eventually got the SmallRig 2984 Panasonic S1H Camera Cage because it uses two screws to lock the body, so it doesnt wiggle around.

  • A SmallRig 2913 Wood Side Handle helps move the weight to your arm.
  • Use pins to keep parts from spinning. Safety is basically everything when youre carrying expensive glass.

Like someone mentioned, the S1H weight is a beast once you add glass. Over the years, I've found modular parts are way better for the wallet.

I disagree with prioritizing side handles because they dont feel safe for this weight. Try:
