Which lens adapter works best for Sigma fp with EF lenses?

So I finally bit the bullet and picked up a Sigma fp for a documentary project I'm shooting around Seattle next month and now I'm stuck in the adapter rabbit hole. I've got a bunch of Canon EF glass—mostly the 24-70mm and a 50mm prime—that I really want to use without buying all new L-mount lenses because honestly I'm broke after buying the camera body lol.

I did some digging and obviously the Sigma MC-21 seems like the official choice but I've read some weird stuff online about it not supporting continuous autofocus or being super slow with older Canon lenses which is a huge deal for me since I'm mostly shooting handheld and following people around. Then I saw the Metabones Smart Adapter but that thing is like double the price and I cant really tell if the performance boost is actually worth the extra cash or if its just hype.

Here is what I am looking for:

  • Budget: Trying to stay under $250 or $300 if possible
  • Use case: Documentary work, lots of movement, mostly video
  • Must have: Decent autofocus speed and solid build quality (no wiggling)
  • Timeline: Need to have this figured out by the end of the month

Is the MC-21 actually as bad for video AF as people say or am I overthinking it? Or is there some other brand I am totally missing like Commlite or something...

Grabbed a Commlite CM-EF-L Adapter last year.

  • Bad focus
  • Wobbly mount Honestly be careful, cheap ones dont always lock in reliably for doc work.

You definitely need to prioritize a mount that won't wiggle when you're pulling focus! If you can find a deal, the Metabones Canon EF to L-mount T Smart Adapter is absolutely amazing for reliability and build quality. It is basically the gold standard for a reason! Since you're on a budget though, the Commlite CM-EF-L Electronic Lens Mount AF Adapter is a fantastic alternative that actually supports continuous AF in video, which is a total lifesaver for doc work. Just a quick tip: always make sure your lens firmware is updated too, not just the adapter! It makes the communication way more stable and helps the AF behave. You are going to create some incredible footage with that fp, it is such a beast for video!

i literally just bought a sigma fp last week for a travel gig and im hitting the exact same wall as you. its honestly driving me crazy because i have all this great canon glass sitting here and every adapter i look at seems to have some massive dealbreaker for video work. ive been scouring the forums for like three weeks now trying to find something that actually handles continuous af without breaking the bank but it feels like hitting a brick wall. like you said the official sigma one sounds perfect on paper until you realize the af-c situation is a total mess for handheld stuff. im starting to get pretty stressed about it since my shoot starts soon too and i really dont want to drop another grand on native lenses right now. its such a specific pain point with this body... really hoping someone has a secret workaround because im totally stumped.
