So I finally pulled the trigger on a Lumix S5II after years of shooting on a much smaller Fuji setup and honestly the jump to full frame is amazing but man the lens situation is stressing me out a bit. Im heading to Japan in about three weeks—mostly Tokyo and Kyoto—and I really want to keep my kit as minimal as possible because I know Im gonna be walking like 15 miles a day. I want to stick to primes for that street photography vibe but every time I think I've picked one I read something else that changes my mind.
Ive done a fair amount of digging and I keep seeing the Lumix 35mm f1.8 pop up as the sensible choice because its light and the autofocus is supposedly perfect with the new phase detect. But then I look at the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN Contemporary and it just looks so much better built plus it has that physical aperture ring which I really miss. Some reviewers say the Sigma can be a bit jittery with AF in video but I'm mostly shooting stills... still it makes me nervous if it's gonna hunt when I'm trying to catch someone crossing the street quickly.
Then there's the wild card which is that tiny Sigma 45mm f2.8. Its basically half the price and tiny but is f2.8 too slow for night street photography? Tokyo has plenty of lights but I dont want to be stuck at crazy high ISOs all night. I also looked at the 50mm f1.8 Panasonic but it feels a bit tight for those narrow alleys in Shinjuku.
My budget is right around $600 to $800 total so I could maybe swing two used lenses or one really nice one. I just want something that has some character but wont weigh me down. I mostly do candid shots of people and some architecture, mostly in low light or at dusk. What are the best prime lenses you guys have actually used for street on the L-mount? Should I just stick to the native Panasonic glass for the best performance or is the Sigma stuff worth the trade off in size and feel?
> Sigma 35mm f2 (looks great but is AF fast enough?) Jumping in here because I actually went through this exact same internal struggle last month. I bought the Sigma 35mm f2 DG DN Contemporary thinking it would be the perfect street lens, but unfortunately, it didnt live up to the hype for me. The build is gorgeous, but the autofocus felt a bit hesitant on my S5II compared to the native lenses. Its not slow exactly, just not as confident as I needed it to be for quick snapshots. If you check out the compatibility charts on the L-Mount Alliance website, youll see the native Panasonic glass always has that slight edge for burst shooting and tracking. I eventually swapped it for the Panasonic Lumix S 35mm f1.8. Yeah, its plasticky and kinda boring, but it just works every single time. For a big trip like Japan, Id prioritize reliability over that aperture ring, honestly. Missing a shot in Shinjuku because the lens was hunting would be the worst.
Man, you're gonna have an absolute blast in Japan! The S5II is such a beast for those neon-soaked streets. Since you mentioned Shinjuku, you seriously need to look at the Panasonic Lumix S 24mm f1.8. Most people default to 35mm, but in Tokyo, you're constantly looking up at massive buildings or squeezed into tiny izakayas where 35mm just won't cut it. The 24mm is feather-light, matches the ergonomics of your camera perfectly, and the AF is instantaneous. It’s fantastic for getting that sense of scale in the architecture while still being fast enough to keep your ISO low when the sun drops. With your $800 budget, you could actually snag a used Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG DN Art if you want that absolute wow factor. It’s definitely heavier than the f1.8 series, but the rendering is honestly on another level. It feels like a professional tool and that f1.4 is a total cheat code for the dark alleys in Kyoto. If you want to keep it minimal and light though, stick with the native Panasonic 1.8 primes. They all share the same dimensions and weight, so your muscle memory stays the same regardless of which glass is on the front. I’d grab the 24mm and maybe a used Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f1.8 for those moments where you want a tighter frame. That combo is a killer street setup for a trip like this!
> Sigma 45mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary... is f2.8 too slow for night street photography? In my experience, f2.8 is a total trap for night street work. I tried a similar slow setup in Osaka and the noise was unbearable. You think its fine until youre in a dim alley trying to catch someone moving. Youll end up with blurry messes. Dont prioritize size over light... you really want f1.8 for those Tokyo nights.
