I recently jumped into the L-mount alliance with a Lumix S5II, and while I’m loving the performance, I feel like my kit is still missing those essential 'quality of life' extras. Since this ecosystem is a bit unique with the partnership between Panasonic, Sigma, and Leica, I’m curious what accessories you all find indispensable. I’m already looking at the Sigma MC-21 adapter to use some older glass, but are there specific vertical grips or high-speed UHS-II cards you’d recommend for this system? I mainly do hybrid video and street photography, so I'm looking for gear that stays portable but adds functionality. What’s the one must-have accessory currently in your L-mount bag that you can’t live without?
I would suggest focusing on the data pipeline first because the S5II is a total beast, but honestly, it really only shines once you've got the right workflow setup. Since ur doing hybrid video and street photography, you gotta think about how that 10-bit video and high-speed burst mode affects ur hardware. Basically, if ur card can't keep up with the write speeds, the camera's buffer will choke right when you're hitting a crucial moment during a street session. I've been shooting with Lumix for years and the first thing I learned is that speed is everything. For your situation, I'd recommend: 1. Lexar Professional 2000x 128GB SDXC UHS-II Card V90 — These are AMAZING for those heavy All-I video files. Having a V90 rating is lowkey essential if you don't want the recording to randomly stop during a shoot tho.
2. Panasonic DMW-BGS5 Vertical Battery Grip — This adds that extra battery which is HUGE for long video days, and it makes vertical street portraits feel way more natural in the hand.
3. SmallRig Black Mamba Cage for Panasonic LUMIX S5 II — I LOVE this cage! It’s super lightweight and lets you mount a handle or a mic without adding crazy bulk to your street setup. Also, since you mentioned the Sigma MC-21 Mount Converter EF-L, just remember it's fantastic for adapting glass, but it can be a bit jittery with AF-C in some video modes... I guess it’s fine for photography tho! It’s a fantastic system to be in and you're gonna have sooo much fun with it. gl!
yo, welcome to the L-mount fam!! Honestly, for hybrid video and street stuff, I think power management is ur biggest hurdle. You could drop a ton on the official Panasonic DMW-BLK22 Lithium-Ion Battery, which is great but highkey expensive. Personally, I'm super satisfied with the Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack and Dual Charger for Panasonic DMW-BLK22—it’s a total bargain and basically performs the same for long video shoots. Also, for street photography, I'd compare bulky straps to the Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap. The Cuff is lowkey and way more portable, whereas a neck strap just gets in the way... especially if you're using a gimbal. Tbh, grab the batteries first... nothing kills the vibe like a dead camera lol. Good luck with the S5II! 👍
Honestly, you dont need those overpriced cards. For the S5II, the Kingston Canvas React Plus 128GB UHS-II SDXC Card is basically a total steal at $60 and handles the bitrate fine. Also, for street photography, skip the bulky grip. Grab a SmallRig L-Bracket for Panasonic LUMIX S5 II for like $40 instead. It adds just enough height for your pinky without making the camera huge. Good luck!!
