I recently picked up a Lumix S5II and I am looking to simplify my kit. Instead of carrying heavy zooms, I want one high-quality prime lens that can stay on my camera most of the time. I am currently torn between the classic 35mm and 50mm focal lengths for general use. I have been looking at the Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN for its compact size, but the Panasonic 50mm f/1.8 also seems like a great, lightweight value option. I mainly shoot a mix of street, environmental portraits, and travel photos.

Does anyone have a favorite do-it-all prime that balances image quality and portability? What would you recommend as the most versatile pick for the L-mount?

sooo i’ve been thinking about this for a few hours and i’d actually suggest a different approach. i get the appeal of the lightweight stuff, but if youre simplifying to just one lens that stays on your Panasonic Lumix S5II forever, you gotta think about safety and reliability first!! lightweight lenses are cool but they can be a bit fragile for heavy travel. i mean, your camera is a tank, so why put a weak link on it?

  • internal sealing: travel means dust and rain. you need a lens with pro-grade gaskets to keep your sensor safe.
  • durability: metal barrels last years longer than plastic when you’re out on the street every day.
  • aperture safety: having f/1.4 gives you a massive safety net for low-light shots that f/2 might struggle with. honestly, i’d look at the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art. it’s roughly $800-900, which is pricier than the ones you mentioned, but the build quality is literally on another level. it’s a bit heavier, but idc because i know it wont fail me in a storm. definitely a better long-term value imo. anyway, gl with the choice! cheers

Seconding the recommendation above! I totally think 35mm is the way to go for travel cuz it captures so much more of the vibe, right?? Honestly, I've been looking at the technical details and the Sigma 35mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary is literally amazing. It has an SLD glass element to help with those annoying chromatic aberrations and the build is all metal... it feels so premium on the Lumix S5II!! While the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 is a fantastic value, it doesnt have that tactile aperture ring which I loveee. Plus, the minimum focusing distance on the Sigma is only 27cm so you can get really cool close-up shots too!! I'm still kinda new to this but iirc the 35mm focal length is highkey better for environmental portraits anyway... so yeah, definitely grab the Sigma!! good luck

Late to the party but honestly... I had issues with going too cheap on glass before, it was NOT as good as expected. Before I give advice, curious about one thing: whats ur actual budget cap??
